1971 BOSS 351 Mustang

BOSS 302s were built to compete at both the track and the drag strip. To do that they needed lots of power and better than average handling. The Ford engineers went to work and the resulting car won the Trans-Am championship in 1970. Meanwhile the BOSS 429 was tearing up drag strips across America. Thing were about to change though because Ford pulled out of racing the following year. They still built a BOSS in 1971, but it wasn’t quite as raw as the bosses that preceded it. Don’t get me wrong, the 351 was an impressive powerplant, but the car had grown a little soft. It was still a great high speed cruiser and probably a better vehicle for most consumers though. Only about 1,800 were produced though and this rusty project is one of them. It’s listed for sale here on eBay for $10,500 or best offer. Thanks goes to Wayne G for the tip!

BOSS 351 Engine

The original engine is there, but it is out of the car and in pieces though for some odd reason. Most everything else appears to be accounted for though. This is one of those project that you will want to inspect in person. Sometimes rust is better than it looks in photos, but most of the time it is much worse.

Some Rust

The asking price may seem high for a car that is so invested with the tin worm, but price guides show that the 302’s bloated big brother still brings a pretty penny at auction. So, maybe someone with lots of time and money could bring this one back to life. It would look stunning after a full restoration and although it may not be as wild as a 429, I bet it would be a thrill to drive again!

    Well maybe for a investor this would be a great opportunity to have a rare car but he better have deep pockets or able to do most work himself. Our 70 Mach1 with the 351C was in great condtion compared to this an we drove it from Colorado Springs to Kansas City after buying it without a hitch for $14,500 But after stripping it we had to replace as much as he’s saying this car needs and it wasn’t cheap. But the car already sold so someone is happy.

    I had a 70 Mustang fastback with the 351c when new. Loved the car AND engine. IMO, the 71 Mustang was UGLY and bloated. It had and still has no appeal to me even in the Boss 351 mode.

    The metal in the rear wheelwells is mostly not there. The value in this car is mostly not there, and you would need to add a lot of value (metal, sweat, paint, etc, etc) to get it to the point that it was worth something. It sold but it’s no surprise that it sold for an offer less than the asking.

    No carb with the engine? The original 715 CFM carb for the Boss 351 commands a lot of coin.

      Are you sure the CFM was 715? The early Shelby’s had 715cfm center pivot float Holley’s. I’m 99% the BOSS had 780cfm Holley’s (early production ’til 4/71). My friend bought one new with 780cfm.
      Also in the pics of the eng parts laying on ground, the intake is for a spread bore carb, which is common with the ’72 351C HO in the Cougars. Might want to check part #’s.

    I’m with the guys who would walk away from this one.. It’s possible that the buyer only wanted the vin and chassis numbers to go along with the original engine and mechanical parts..

    I can tell you from experience that the body on this Mustang is not worth saving without “oil well” deep pockets.. IMHO

    Wow would have never thought this car would get that kind of money in that shape even given its rarity . Big investment.
