Stump Puller: 1971 Pontiac Trans Am 455 HO

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

After sitting 15 years, this 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has been brought out into the light of day and is being auctioned off here on eBay. There are 3 days remaining in the auction and the car is bid to $33,333 after 49 bids. However, the reserve has not been met. Based on the condition and popularity of this car, I think it will need to get past $40k to meet the reserve. The Trans Am is located in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and looks to be in nice condition.

Most 1971 Trans Am came with a bright blue interior but this one is black and looks very nice. The seller states that the car will need some freshening up. It is hard to tell if all of the pictures were taken recently because some of them look a little dated. The stated odometer mileage is 48,000 miles. From 1970-1972, Pontiac offered the Trans Am in two paint schemes. One was Cameo White with a blue stripe down the center and the other was Lucerne Blue with a white stripe. All 1971 and 1972 Trans Am were built with the top-of-the-line 455HO engine.

This Trans Am appears to be well equipped with an automatic transmission, tilt steering, power windows, and air conditioning. I own a 1971 Trans Am that is unrestored that is similar to this except that it has a blue interior. The 455 HO engine was obviously a 455 cubic inch displacement motor but it came with round port heads, header style exhaust manifolds, and an aluminum intake manifold. The 455 HO was rated at 335 horsepower from the factory based on a gross horsepower rating.

This particular Trans Am has bumperettes on the rear chrome bumper. This was a fairly rare option and apparently not very popular. I think it breaks up the lines of the rear styling. The glass looks good on this car and the Trans Am is rolling on factory honeycomb wheels. While factory 4 speeds Trans Am bring more money, the low-end torque and pulling power that this car musters, even with an automatic transmission, will bring a smile to your face.

Every time I see one of these, I am reminded of Jeff Bridges & Clint Eastwood in “Thunderbolt & Lightfoot.” Interestingly though, the polycast Honeycomb wheels were actually heavier than the Rally II’s, and I never really warmed to them. This one looks really nice! GLWTA!! :-)

Oh boy. Hope that puddle in front of the car isn’t something worth noting!

Nice ride for sure, with plenty of power and not docile or humble about it either. Looking at this ’71 it has a different vibe than other high performance cars of that time period, more of a dressed up road racer all hunkered down low with flares and spoilers and a strange looking reverse facing hood scoop.

I had a friend with one blue paint/white interior and that thing was a beast. They were ahead of the pack when it came to handling. The one car I wanted someday.

I love the look of the honeycomb wheels.

All options avail? It does not have the bright side roof drip railings or 8 track player.
Not sure what fact radio was in there, if any.
Was cruise control or UNIFIED igntion avail in ’71?
Can’t verify from the pics if it has power locks, rear defogger or rear console.
I believe the bias ply only tires that originally came with car were a bit wider than these BFGs.

I had a white 71 TA with the blue bird on the hood, 455 engine & 160 or 180 speedometer (it’s been 35 yrs ago) so I don’t understand where you say there was only 2 paint schemes.
