1973 Mercury Comet GT: Parts Car Special

comet_1

This Mercury Comet sent in by Barn Finds reader Bill M. will not be returning to the road anytime soon. Found here on craigslist in Atlanta, this Comet has taken a hard hit in the rear but is nicely equipped – certainly, it has enough parts to give to keep another Comet or Maverick on the road.

The Comet was a twin to the Ford Maverick with very few discernible differences. This particular car has the desirable 302 V8, so it’s got a little more punch than cars saddled with the inline six. Unfortunately for this sad Comet GT, that powertrain is going to be quickly stripped and dropped into a car needing some help in the engine department.

The pictures are pretty poor, but really, a non-collectible car like the Comet is destined for the junkyard with any accident damage. I wonder how long this accident victim has been sitting in the woods with its ancient Florida license plates barely visible. It looks like there’s a fair amount of moisture on the glass, so you can bet there is an unfavorable rust-to-metal ratio.

The famous factory stripe package! I always find it intriguing to see the various trim bits that survive even the most adverse conditions. If the engine isn’t seized, it will hopefully live on in a more deserving (or at least less-damaged) platform. I’m glad the seller is at least trying to give the Comet’s guts a chance to live on, but that price is going to have to come down a bit before it’s worthwhile.

This poor thing has all the mechanical parts necessary to convert an early six-cylinder Mustang to V8 power. The drivetrain and suspension will fit with a minimum of problems. Then put an ad on E-bay for hard-to-find Comet GT body parts, and try to get a little money back from the shell.
This is a situation where you can’t feel bad about gutting a donor car to fix another, as the damage to the left rear quarter has turned the unibody to scrap. That’s one serious lick to bend the roof pillar like that. The ’73 models still had the thin original rear bumper that did little more than reflect sunlight, and somebody just nailed this poor thing.

Sad, sad, sad, example of a rare car that’s been terribly neglected. These are great cars and the GTs came with very attractive hi-po trim packages, bucket seats and body colors.

if it was anywhere near by I would go get it for parts. Ive owned 20 of these cars between mavericks and comets and I love them all but sadly most of them got cut up and sent all over the world to save better cars
    heres my comet gt

I echo the same sentiments. Several years ago I found a Grabber Blue with white bucket interior in Ely, Nevada. It was clean, shiny and rust-free, of course. The only problem was the local fire dept. had used it to demonstrate how the Jaws Of Life work. At the same time in downtown Ely was a Bright Lime ’72 GT with black interior in fairly nice shape, just missing the original wheels. Both cars were sold new at Ely Ford-Mercury, a dealer that sits to this day in its original location when the Lincoln Highway was opened.
