1986 ASC McLaren Capri RS With Only 691 Miles!

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for the crazy paint schemes and areo body kits that were fitted to the more performance oriented cars of the ’80s. Just look at this Mercury Capri and tell me it isn’t cool! The run of the mill stock Capri doesn’t look bad, but after ASC/McLaren worked their cosmetic and performance magic, you have something truly impressive. The car you see here is one of the 115 built in ’86 and has seen just 691 miles! You can find this more or less brand new ASC McLaren Capri RS here on eBay in Maysville, Oklahoma with a BIN of $29,500.

With an asking price of nearly $30k, this might seem like a lot to pay for a Fox body Mustang with a body kit, but it’s so much more than that. Yes, the body kit is part of what makes it look so cool, but under that charcoal grey metallic paint, flared fenders and body kit is a tuned 5.0 V8 and a reworked suspension. While engine modifications were quite limited, really just an improved cam, this was the quickest car you could buy directly from Ford in ’86 with a 0 to 60 time under 6 seconds and a quarter mile time in the 13 second range. And if you like to go through the twists, the lowered and stiffened suspension greatly improved the handling prowess.

Keeping you safely planted in the car is handled by some high bolster buckets. Recaro seats were optional for those that were worried about not staying in their seats. For the most part, the interior was left stock, except for the Spectrum Radar Detector. As you can see, the interior of this car is in perfect condition, it’s still covered in most of it’s factory plastic covers. Strangely, it was optioned with an automatic. It’s said to be one of 9 ordered with the automatic, so from a collectibility standpoint it’s actually a good thing.

I know this isn’t a dusty and rusty barn find, but how often do you find a 31 year old special edition performance car with almost no miles? Clearly, it was carefully stored away in someone garage and has been protected from the elements, rodents and the wear and tear that comes from use. As much as I would love to have this car, I actually would rather have one with a few more miles on it so I wouldn’t feel bad about driving it, but if you are in the market for a collectors piece that is only going to go up in value this one is worth considering!

I’m not kidding, If this had t-tops and it were a stick shift I would literally trade in my RX7 for it! This thing is just incredibly gorgeous in my opinion and I’m not a fan of American cars in the least bit.

It’s because of those tail light covers…right ? LOL. It would be an upgrade though :)

OK….I’ll be the first to tell you…IMO, it isn’t cool. The stripe scheme as well as the wheels, not to mention the price tag at the time and reflected sales numbers regardless of production numbers. How many are documented ? IMO, the Capri should have never been sister’d with or pitted against the Mustang. It was a failed attempt to relive the days of the Mustang and Cougar. It failed by the numbers. Again…IMO, they were ugly compared to the Mustang.
The Capri should have stayed European. Kinda like bringing the Cortina to the States to compete with the Falcon. FoMoCoUK lost it’s way with cross branding during the 60’s and forward until the 90’s.

They are all documented, at least the coupe and vert ascmclarens, and this car belonged to the man that had ALL the documentation of these cars. This doesnt change your opinion of the looks sure, but it is a very rare car, and the numbers are well known

I’m not a fan of the Fox body cars, ( and I had an ’88 5.0) but this is THE sharpest one I’ve ever seen. Like all Mercury’s from the very beginning, a Ford, and then some. Probably the same car underneath, but just that extra touch. Never heard of this particular model, but no doubt it’s the real deal.

Love or hate – it’s still something else – must be the only one like it

If I remember correctly the flared fenders were standard and an attempt at differentiating the Capri from the Mustang.

Although automatic is rarer it does not make it more desirable.

The Carfax would be interesting on this car.

I would like to see when it was first sold and what happened to it after that.

It might have stayed with ASC for years then to be sold to it’s first owner.

Not many people would put a car like this away and only drive it less than 700 miles.

I doubt that there would be a “Carfax” available for a vehicle of this age… That’s funny :)

I knew the original owner of this car and bought the final ASC produced that he owned with h 2100 miles so story is accurate. This car has had the best ofcare since new and is not with a dealer trying to sell it.

It amazes me how many people flock towards stored, low mileage vehicles. Unless these vehicles have been regularly maintained with proper fluid/filter changes and started, run, and driven to dissipate moisture build-up and keep their “suspension legs” as it were….they become atrophied. Just like Senior Citizen’s who don’t move around. Their muscles become atrophied. Deterioration is inevitable. They may not have a lot of miles but, if they are not exercised, prepare to replace a few organs as well as a few appendages.

That’s not the case with this old gal it’s been properly cared for since new and is the best of any of them. I’ve known this car for over 20 years.

That’s a surprisingly good-looking car. The color scheme is unusual and actually really handsome.

I’d want to drive and enjoy it, which would negate its low-mileage value. But a $30K asking price doesn’t seem outrageous, so maybe it would be worth it. :-D

That’s what makes America great…difference of opinion !
        BTW…I agree. Imagine a 66 Shelby GT350 as a Hatchback?
I just threw up in my mouth a little….blerp !

The hatch is way better looking then the coupe, the coupe is a better drag car, lighter and stiffer. While the 60s mustang aren’t hatches, the hatch is shaped more like a fastback. If the hatches were less desirable, there wouldn’t be so many around

I’ve seen ASC McLaren Mustangs, but never a Capri! I always thought this gen Capri was better looking than the same year Mustang. From the flared fenders to the bubble hatch, to the upright front grille. And that paint scheme while a bit outrageous, isn’t obnoxious like a red/yellow 90s Viper for example. Then a look inside and… an automatic. What a letdown!

Little did he know back in 1986 that the world in 2017 would be not quite ready to embrace a Mercury Capri with an automatic transmission…..

BTW I like the car. I normally prefer the Mustangs of this generation but the McLaren treatment on these has actually aged pretty well and makes the car look good. The grey and orange really pops.

I just think it was dumb not to drive and enjoy it. He’s going to get a negative roi and have a very hard time getting more than 20k for it. The four-eyed Fox bodies have a following but it’s not at this price level, especially for an automatic.

Ahh yes the 80’s. The decade of excess and expression. Love the look of this car and a bit sad that no Capri’s ever came to Australia. Can someone tell me what the silver handle is for mounted on the roof?

It is not a handle, it is a map light. It pivots down from the point farthest from the windshield. You can then point it to the left or the right as needed.

Commonly referred to as a map light. Standard option on the Mustang GT and Capri RS of the era. Unless the vehicle was equipped with T-roof or sun roof. LM killed the Capri after 86 as they began to market the Merkur line.

i have one of these cars 40G in storage for many years –I’m of the opinion that each Ford /Mercury dealer got one to find customer acceptance after Asc showed ford its answer to rear window treatment ,air dams ,bumper covers etc and ford gave the redesign business to Cars and Concepts for the all new ford GT’s —?? /Lee

To me the boxed/flared fenders of the Capri look much better than he Mustang, BUT, leave the bubble hatch off mine and give me the Stang hatch……..That combo looks great

I have had many Fox body Mustangs and Capris. I always thought that I liked the Capri Hatch better than the Mustang. On a couple of occasions I was able to watch the snow off the roof exit off the rear glass on both cars. The Mustang was nothing but turbulence. But the Capri was a smooth uniform sweep of snow. (both at approx. 70MPH)
The fenders on the pictured ASC are nothing special. These are stock fenders and quarters. I was lucky enough to get a McLaren body kit. And installed it on one of my Capris. I always thought that the Mustang and Capri were all screwed up on the bodies. The original Fox Mustangs through 1986 were true to form front to rear. But once the 1987 came out with the rounded nose. IMO the front did not match the rear.
My dream Fox Capri/Mustang would be Mustang quarters and fenders. With 1987 nose. (GT or LX) and a Capri rear hatch and bumper set-up. That way front and the rear would all be rounded and smooth. (With a McLaren rear spoiler naturally!)
I know that is strange. But we are all different. Right?

Europe is going nuts over the1969-86? real Ford Capris. They are restoring all they can get their hands on. I had a few myself that I bought new in the 70s. Wish i still had my 77. They stopped bringing them imto the US in 77. No Capri for 78 until this fox body rebadge came to be in 88. These are certainly hens teeth but I still cant get too exited about them.

Aussies as well. Capri’s and early Cortina’s are going for stupid money. Add to that any Ford Escort….

I’m trying to figure out why I don’t have one if these in the “Memory Bank?!?!?! Too many adult beverages, years ago?!! Nah, no such thing as too much of those!!! But this thing. WOW! This thing absolutely has my eyes glued!!!!! BUT (there is always a “but”) cannot do an automatic in something with this much potential!!!! No way, no how!!! But #II, while I like the rims, the tires are just too small!!! Silly?? Yeah, maybe. I like my stuff to look as good as they go!!! Unfortunately, if I bought it, out with the auto, in with a built 6sd. Since I’m trashing the “purity”, throw some extra go fast goodies under the hood. Lastly, since I have darn near killed all the “Purists” out there, might as well put the last nail in……………….and drive the snot out of it. At any and all opportunities!!!
