30 Years in the Shed: 1957 Chevrolet 210

It’s pretty obvious that this 1957 Chevrolet 210 2-door sedan had been sitting in this spot for a good long while when this picture was taken. Since then the seller has pulled it out and cleaned it up considerably. It’s now listed for sale here on eBay, where bidding has risen to $6,500 already with no remaining reserve. The listing locates the car in Barnesville, Minnesota.

I’m guessing this is what the car looked like when first pulled out of the shed. That front license plate is from North Dakota and although I can’t read the date on it, the plate itself is a design that was used from 1984 to 1988.

The seller is kind enough to include some pictures of the rust issues on the floor so that you have an idea of what you might be getting into.

It looks much better now that the seller has cleaned it up! That’s a period custom grille of the type you might have found in a JC Whitney catalog. I found new ones like it for sale here for almost $400. I hope the original steel rims come with the sale as well; these modern wheels look out of place to me on this vintage car.

Yeah, it needs some work in here. Currently, there is a 3-speed transmission in the car although we have no idea if that was original or not. Originally this interior was Ivory vinyl w/Charcoal pattern cloth according to the trim tag. The tag also tells us that the body was originally India Ivory on top with Canyon Coral on the bottom. Sounds pretty to me!

We really don’t know anything about the 283 engine currently in the bay, and to be honest, I suspect any thought of originality for this car has probably left most of your heads already; I don’t blame you, this isn’t the car to buy if you want to restore an original 210. I’m sure this will get some type of late model engine swap. What would you install?

    Wide body color steel wheels with factory dog dish hub caps, 4 wheel disc brakes, lower the car an inch or two, front and rear sway bars, 292 Chevy 6 cylinder that went down all the isles at Clifford Research, aftermarket throttle body injection and a T5 speed. Resurrect the interior close to original (don’t spend the money on “official” reproduction stuff. And drive it every day. Naturally you would do this after the rust had been addressed.

    Back in the day that aftermarket grille was known as a “Cal Custom”. Otherwise, seller might want to find some different wheels, don’t think the disgusting ones he put on are going to help sell it.

      Cal Custom was a company’s name. They made a lot of custom stuff etc.. A lot of company’s made these grilles.

    I’m with XMA I don’t get the feeling either and frankly I think Tri 5 prices are outrageous. I know the Hobby has appreciated 275% in the last 11 years but now i think many asking prices are unrealistic in terms of the costs of getting some of these puppies back on the road again.
    I also want to remind Barn Finders that the Winner’s Curse is that if you are the highest bidder for the car, it means that you are the only person in the room or on the Internet who thinks the car is worth that much money, whatever the car is.
    In the past I have simply gotten in touch with the Seller and asked bluntly what he/she wants for the car. Period. No bidding, no nonsense. If the figure is satisfactory then I’m an owner. If not, I walk away. When I find more space I’ll be back in the market again, but for the enjoyment of the cars, not the money.

    Looking at the motor pic, you can see that the core support has been cut and the radiator repositioned. Ths is usually done with a shade tree engine swap. Too lazy to unbolt core support, so hacksaw time. Boo Hoo.

    Put a “noisy” small block in there, at least 331 cubic inches, gear drive, loud pipes, noisy 4 speed transmission, more than just an old Chevy to look at but actually draw attention with all that wonderful mechanical music… probably well played out over the decades but still plenty cool.
