390 V8 Garage Find: 1968 Mercury Cyclone

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Cyclone was a performance car marketed by Mercury from 1964-71. At first it was a compact, then later an intermediate. In the late 1960s, it was positioned between the Cougar and Marauder for those buyers wanting some muscle, and it was Mercury’s car of choice in NASCAR for a time. Mercury’s mid-size cars were redesigned for 1968, which included the Cyclone that saw production of 12,260 fastbacks this year. The car here is one of them, stored in a dark garage in Utica, New York, and may need a lot of work. It’s available here on Facebook Marketplace for $10,500.

From what we can tell, this is a ’68 Cyclone, but not one of the more desirable GT or Spoiler models. Nor did it have the hot 429CJ V8. The photo of the ID tag provided by the seller says it should be a 390 cubic inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor that produced 265 hp. According to the seller, the car has an automatic transmission.

The seller offers no information to help sell the car. While he says it’s a numbers-matching machine, he directs interested parties to call him for a description of his wares. He says it’s green in color, but you can’t tell that in the light of the photos. The mileage claim is but 10,000, but since these odometers only went to 99,999, chances are it has turned over. This might be a good project if you could determine if the product matches the price.

Lazy seller won’t properly describe or photograph the car. Let him keep his overpriced junk.
