396/4-speed: 1965 Impala Convertible

1965 Impala Convertible

This is the first Impala I’ve gotten excited about in quite a while. It has a 325 horsepower 396 V8, 4-speed M20, and air conditioning. Plus it’s a convertible! This was quite a car when new. I suppose it still could be today. The seller claims that the engine runs well and with a little work could be a daily driver. There’s one big problem though. It came from Minnesota and as a result has lots and lots of rust! The seller is realistic in stating that just about every panel will need attention. There’s even a few holes in the frame so this might not be a job for us western boys. The fellas in the rust belt should have no problem and after lots of work, would have one heck of a cruiser. Better hurry though because the reserve is off and bidding here on eBay ends in about an hour!

There is no shortage of rust on this car. The new exhaust really makes the rusty bottom stand out.

I’m from the Midwest rust belt and I wouldn’t touch this car. I’m sick of rust buckets and if I buy another classic it will definitely have spent it’s whole life in the desert southwest or west coast.

Love it – least it’s got floors – I particularly like the shot of the rotted fender with the hero badges – don’t these big GM rags have boxed chassis rails ? – be a rare car – I’d want the correct caps for the money tho’

So are they also faking the evaporator box on the firewall, the compressor on the right side of the engine, all the pressure hoses, the receiver/drier and the condenser in front of the radiator along with the comfort controller on the dash too. They went to a lot of trouble to fake those outlets.

Oh, and it also has the fake spacer between the core support and the radiator only factory installed systems would have. Their good.

You know for the 6k that it sold for it would make a nice rat rod with the 396 4 speed. smutch up the rust and throw on a 500 dollar macco job on it and go cruising. What the hell you don’t need a show car to have a lot of fun. I had plenty of beaters in my day and for the money this would be a cool beater / cruiser car.

The eBay listing said it was ended by the seller because the item was sold. So, it doesn’t look like it sold on eBay. He’s either sold it locally or he’s going to relist and take advantage of the flood of BarnFinds interest!

I could see using this as a beater but I don’t know about the 500 Macao paint job. Looks like it’s already been done before looking at the quarter panel pic. Someone has already pizza patched this thing up and it’s popping apart again. It’s still better than the two 65’s I looked at recently along with the 66 wagon. Lol. The one is a real shame.Tahoe turquoise with white into 396 4speed ss hardtop with 23k on it. Been in a swamp since 73. Nothing worth saving except some hard parts. Guy has a 327 4 speed convertible a’ll most as bad. May be saving a 69 c/10 from the same fate from this guy though.

I can’t put my finger on it, but something about its stance doesn’t look kosher. Maybe it’s just the non-stock redlines. And the steering column looks replaced, so it might not be a factory 4-speed. Seller should verify numbers.
