I think these cars will be highly sought after someday, especially ones in this condition. This 1984 Pontiac Trans Am is listed for sale here on eBay and is bid to $16,000 with 3 days remaining. The car is located in Alva, Florida and the seller has had the car for 3 years of ownership. The odometer shows 39,047 miles and the seller states that the car is mint with no rust or leaks.
Pontiac always succeeded in going just a little further with their Trans Am models compared to the Camaro Z28. This black and gold Trans Am is equipped with a 5.0 liter (305 cubic inch) V8 engine that included air induction from the hood scoop. The engine is a L69 5.0 HO engine. The engine was fed through a Rochester Quadrajet that had a Corvette spec cam and special exhaust. This was enough to generate a respectable 190 horsepower and 240 lb ft of torque from the small V8.
The car is well optioned and the Borg-Warner T5 transmission is an especially nice manual transmission to shift through the gears. The 7.5 inch rear end houses 3:23 rear gears and Car and Driver reported a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds and a 15.0 second quarter mile. I raced a number of these cars back in the 1980’s and I am not sure that they are as fast as Car and Driver reported.
This car is said the run and drive well and the car appears to have been meticulously maintained. The seller states that the car was stored in a barn for 25 years and he installed new brakes, tires, power antenna, radiator and stereo. With the low mileage and 5 speed, this car should sell in high teens and maybe even $20k. I wish GM would have let their divisions keep making their own engines and not gone to corporate drivetrains but that is a discussion for another day. Please check this one out and enjoy the pictures of a clean survivor.
This is a lot of money for an LG4 car with some miles on it. The color scheme and t-tops are probably driving this.
On that note, the acceleration times cited in this article are for an L69 equipped car. This one would be considerably slower.
The article says it’s an L69 car. But I agree that these looked faster than they actually were.
The 8th digit of the VIN is an H. That translates to the LG4. It would be a G if it was an L69.
Yep, it’s an LG4 car as mentioned already and they had a lower RPM redline tachometer, too (L69 equipped cars had a tach that redlined 1,000 rpm or so higher). The LG4 was I think 50 hp down compared to the HO L69 but the peak torque was much closer.
The color scheme is amazing and t-tops are nice and look good.
Why aren’ t-tops avail on current pony cars? For the outrageous money they cost, the tops should be STD! with a choice of glass or metal. & leakproof – or are the car companies embarrassed to admit they STILL can’t build them with no leaks or creaks?
Yes, you are correct. This is a LG4 that the owner added HO stickers to!
Yes,this is a little high priced, pretty, nice and clean, and l would assume average,to low mileage maybe, super, altra rare,no but maybe kinda rare, with these options, l had a 85 Z28 same exterior color, but black and violet interior trim, which l believe is a little rare, l have only seen 1-2 other cars like mine was,so without documentation, no proof, who knows.
For anywhere close to the current bid I’d opt for a TPI IROC or Trans Am instead.

My girl friend at the time bought one exactly like this with the T-top, with a cracked cylinder head. I managed to find a matching number head, to which we had both of them ported and polished. Then we put in a Crane Compucam to waken it up. That car was so much fun to drive. She had the car long after I was out of the picture. Strange thing was that there was an almost identical car around the corner from where she lived.
Straight outta the eighties, a true chick magnet….back then. It’s a clean ride for sure in excellent shape, all set to hear Miami Vice music blaring out the t tops as the junk bond trader hurrys to his office, dressed all sharp and thinking of the next pyramid scheme he can screw his friends over with,,, ah,ha ha…sorry man but I really do try to feel nostalgic for my own time. Someday I guess.
Nice ride.
