40 Year Hibernation: 1971 Dodge Charger R/T

After a successful body style run from 1968 to 1970, it was time for the Dodge Charger to be restyled. While these models are not usually as sought after like the previous ones, they seem to be gaining in popularity. Some of the same styling cues were incorporated such as front-end styling. Here is a 1971 Dodge Charger R/T for sale here on Craigslist in Thompson, Connecticut. Barnfinds reader Ikey H. found this and let us know about it.

The car was found this summer in a Minnesota shed. It has not been registered in 40 years. The seller verified that all the numbers matched. He took the car to Connecticut with plans to restore it. Unfortunately, his wife is suffering a long-term illness and funds set aside for the restoration will be needed for medical expenses. It has a rare factory hood scoop. The vinyl roof is separating from the car but shows no signs of rust. There is a dent on the small trunk lip spoiler and there are some paint issues on the left front fender.

The interior is showing its age. There is not a good picture showing the seats, so we don’t know what condition they are in, other than knowing they will need cleaning. The dash has quite a few cracks on the top. The carpeting could use replacing as well. It has a rare under dash factory stereo cassette tape recorder/player. The car also has bucket seats and console.

Being a high-performance model, the R/Ts engine is the 440 Magnum V-8. It is paired with TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The car has just over 70,000 miles. It also has heavy duty brakes and suspension. The car has not been driven or started in 40 years, so there will be some major expense getting it road worthy. The seller is asking $18,000. This could be a great project for the right person who is a Mopar fan. Is that person you?

Parked after only 7 years/70k, never to be touched again? Still had a decent amount of life left on the ticker. Gotta wonder what major something or other went wrong. True enough, 1978 gas crisis hurt the resale, but not enough

I actually like this style Charger, but the last two shown have asked for top dollar for questionable iron. This guy has to lay off the hooch and come back to reality. I hope the seller isn’t holding their breath waiting for 18k.

I had a ’72 and I like this style, but the market doesn’t agree. These are worth substantially less than the 1968-70 versions.

I don’t know if I would invest the money necessary to bring this thing back to life unless I did it as a labor of love.

Its hard to get a Barn Hunters licence.

Plus Barns are protected in some States

This car is worth about 1/3 of the asking price.
