40 Year Owner: 1970 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

catalina

The current owner and seller of this large convertible bought it when it was only five years old–lots of history there! The car is located in Los Angeles, California and is up for sale here on eBay at no reserve, with bidding currently below $1,000. The seller notes that there is little rust, mainly concentrated around the door hinge pillar, the front of the hood and a few floor issues. The pictures of the floor don’t look too bad to me, though. It does start and move, and the seller is even including a brand new top and rear window for the buyer to install. There’s a stack of receipts and shop orders included as well. I would get this one running and safe, and sort the car mechanically before I tacked the body rust. I think a set of the period Pontiac “rally” wheels would be a great add cosmetically and other than that and a set of seat covers I’d just enjoy driving it!

Does anyone see this as a current or future classic? Already over $1K with reserve not met. Too expensive for what this car is worth if perfect, and what it will take to make it perfect.

I was thinking of it as just a fun driver…not especially significant in any way but a fun cruiser to take to the ice cream shop on a summer evening :-)

I believe it will hold it’s value well, not a real common car, and definately has personality. I think that classic Pontiacs will surprise a lot of folks. They were way better than the AMC car line, and look what the AMC’s are bringing. I’d pick it up if it were closer. If the rust is not too bad, I’d wager it to go to 5K.

Not my choice of convertible, but with a little work this would make someone a nice cruiser. Buy it now and work on it as a winter project and be ready for next summer.

another flipper, poor/lack of pics, bid up to 2k, not a bad price for a plane jane convert. probably not worth much than currant bid.

I had a light green metallic one of these. Was a great car. Was like driving around on my couch it was so big. Mine had a 455 in it so it had decent power to get the thing moving. Lol. It’s one I wish I still had.

Judging from the prices of slightly older Pontiacs, it should be a decent car to own and not loose a whole lot of money on it when one is ready to sell it. The rust does not look too bad, however the costs of reworking those door pillars correctly is going to add up fast.

My first tagged car when I turned 16 and got my license was a 72 triple white Catalina convertible and it was in great condition. Had their 400 as well. Wasn’t a rocket but could get up, and boy perfect cruiser as that’s what it was meant to do. My dad picked it up for me for $1000 cash from a local shop. Not a bad deal imo. This was in 94. At their time in our state a car had to be 25 years old to be considered ” historic “. They had a clause that if it were 20 yo and a limited production or ” rare ” car it could be considered historic and he had a good buddy at their mva so we got it tagged historic. Don’t remember them exact production numbers but they weren’t huge lol. Tell your what, SOOOOO many great memories in that old Pontiac!!!!!!
