440 V8 Roller: 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T

In 1967, Dodge had two mid-size cars to compete in the muscle car arena (started by the Pontiac GTO). One was the sporty fastback Charger that had debuted just the year before. The other was the Coronet R/T which was more of a family car. This ’67 Coronet R/T is mostly there, but the engine and transmission have been pulled, taken apart, and will need rebuilding. With rust held to a minimum, this roller is in Davis, South Dakota, and available here on eBay. Though the seller’s reserve is unmet, the current bid is $8,600.

The Coronet R/T was only in production for four years (1967 to 1970). It came standard with a 375 horsepower, 440 cubic inch V8. 9,553 hardtops were built that first outing along with a scant 628 convertibles. The seller’s car once had a 4-speed manual transmission which is still around. This Dodge used to have a white vinyl top, but it’s been removed and left a little rust behind as a present, possibly the only corrosion on the 57-year-old Mopar. The claimed mileage is 114,000, so the odometer is on its second time around.

This intermediate came with a white bucket seat interior, but work will be needed. The front seats have been duct taped to stay together, and the back seat is torn and frayed across the top. No mention is made of this being a numbers-matching Dodge, though some specific parts are photographed with numbers, so maybe it is/was.

The Coronet R/T would never be a huge seller at Dodge. No more than 10,000 hardtops were ever built in a single model year, compared to the second-generation Charger (1968 to 1970) that saw more than 92,000 copies in ’68. If you like DIY projects, there could be tougher ones out there to work with. Assuming the seller’s reserve isn’t so high as to make the project not feasible.

Depending on the reserve it wouldn’t be hard to do a lot worse when it comes to a Mopar muscle car.
