Barn Find Hauler: 44k Mile 2004 Chevrolet Colorado 4X4

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy Colorado was introduced in 2004 as the successor to the S-10 small pickup. That extended to the GMC Sonoma which was a carbon copy of the Colorado. The first generation would last through 2012 and – when the dust settled – more than 750,000 copies of the two pickups had been sold. This first-year Colorado LS with 4-wheel-drive looks to have been babied from Day 1 and only has 44,000 miles on the odometer. The nearly new truck is in Aurora, Colorado and available here on Barn Finds Classifieds for $17,200.

Basic Colorado trucks came with an inline-4 as standard, but buyers could upgrade to a 3.5-liter, 214 cubic-inch L52 inline-5 which was capable of 220 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. That should be the set-up in the seller’s burgundy-colored pick-up which has just been serviced, including an oil change, coolant flush, and a new thermostat. A recent edition to improve the comfort of the truck’s passengers includes a Bluetooth stereo with Apply Carplay. The factory radio comes with the exchange.

The seller’s truck is one of 117,495 Colorado’s and 27,193 Canyon’s assembled for 2004. The seller bought it off an elderly gentleman who had purchased it new and kept the pickup inside a garage when not in use. The seller needs a larger truck for his needs, so that’s why this one is up for sale. From the photos provided, this looks like an amazingly clean vehicle that has been gently used. We’re told it runs well, there are no known issues, and the factory A/C puts out cold air. The tires look like they have plenty of meat left on them.

After 2012, the Colorado/Canyon would take a three-year break, only to return in 2015 as larger, more modern versions of their former selves. Smaller pickups have given way to mid-size unis and that’s the category the Colorado fits into now.

    A Colorado Colorado?

    used truck for sale.
You post this, but wouldn’t feature this cool Jeep
    J10 that I submitted.

That link worked better. Cool truck. You could buy it and drive it to a declassified bunker in White Sulphur Springs:
        https://www.greenbrier.com/Activities-Events/Bunker-Tours-(20).aspx
That place is on my bucket list.

I don’t think there’s a rhyme or reason to what BF posts (or doesn’t). I’ve sent a whole bunch of cool stuff and they never bite.

How is this a Barn Find?

It might not be a barn find but it is 17 years old now. I know, that’s hard to believe! Add in the low mileage and you have a good find for someone wanting a good barn find hauler.

This doesn’t constitute a barn find. It’s a used truck priced at the moon just like all other trucks right now in this truck bubble we live in. One of these are at about every used car lot in America. Pick your miles.

If these were any good when new then GM wouldn’t have stopped making them. It was a very poor attempt at competing with the Tacoma that…… well Toyota still makes. GM and Ford couldn’t compete and did stop making small trucks. Used their resources to pump out more gas guzzlers and gave the entire segment to Tacoma.

Sadly I see some poor retired sucker paying up for this. Cash only because its too old to get a loan. Having that Bowtie old Homer will think he has a heck of a deal. I think not.

I worked in a Chevrolet dealership when these were new. The material was so disgustingly plastic and CHEAP. The cabin noise, even on the top end models was offensive and I was driving a 1995 S-10 Blazer with over 200K on the clock at that time. My Blazer was so much quieter, more comfortable and solid feeling than the “new” Colorado. Plus I can’t tell you how many of them I had to wrap tap around the tires to measure radial runout on because of the garbage GM was putting on them. Dozens needed new tires, hundreds were “radial force” balanced. I later bought a 2018 Colorado with the “Centennial Edition” package (one of 2918 in all configurations, one of just about 300 in the crew cab long bed). Aside from the horrible 8 speed transmission with torque converter shudder (even after a new torque converter) the truck was awesome. Good power, really good fuel economy (my best 50 mile average was 28.4 mpg and my best tank average was just under 24 mpg) and the color changing Centennial Blue metallic paint was beautiful in my opinion. But alas, GM has screwed the pooch with their trucks.

Chevy and GMC have produced some very good looking pick up trucks, the 1st generation Colorado’s/Canyon’s were definitely not one of them. The S-10 it replaced was FAR much better looking.

Lots of “BarnFind/ Auto Trader” comments, but may I remind all, I feel newer vehicles are welcome. It’s not going to be all ’65 Marlins, and that’s cool. I think the “Colomorado”[sic] was /is an okay truck. They certainly got away from their S-10 roots, which doesn’t fly with me, you want a small pickup or don’t ya’? Must be tough trying to figure out what the public wants, but when they “super-sized” these originally small pickups, they lost me. I think these are good trucks, certainly a far cry from my ’77, and a back yard mechanics nightmare as they age. I wouldn’t want one, but what do you expect from someone that drives a 40 year old truck( and a 30 year old Jeep)
