45K Mile T-Top: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

Every potential seller should look at this ad. I could only find one picture of the exterior of this car that was not blurry. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great car but the pictures are going to hurt the final sales price. The car is a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with the base engine and automatic transmission. The Trans Am is located in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and is listed for auction here on eBay. There are 2 days remaining in the listing and the car has been bid to only $13,400 and the reserve has not been met. The unique feature of this Trans Am is that the seller states that it only has 45,397 miles on the odometer and the car has always been garage kept.

There were three engine options for Trans Am buyers in 1979. The base engine in the 1979 Trans Am was the L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine that produced 185 horsepower and 315 lb ft of torque. That is what this car is equipped with and it was only backed with the Turbo 350 automatic transmission. A buyer could opt for the L37 301 cubic inch V8 engine that was rated at 150 horsepower in 1979 and receive a $150 credit. It was equipped with a 4 barrel carburetor and backed by a Borg Warner T-10 4 speed transmission. Out of the 117,000 Trans Ams built less than 10,000 came with the W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 engine in 1979 which was rated at 220 horsepower. The W72 engine only came with a 4 speed, WS6 suspension and 3.23 rear end in 1979.

This Trans Am is well optioned and the blue hobnail cloth interior represents the upgraded deluxe interior option. Other options include air conditioning, power windows, power locks and tilt steering. The Trans Am also has aftermarket T-Tops. The seller states that the car has power seats but that was not an option in 1979 for the Trans Am. The car has new brakes, exhaust and tires.

One other issues with the ad is that the owner claims the car is equipped with the WS6 suspension package and alloy wheels. This option only came with 15×8 aluminum snowflake wheels and this car has the base 15×7 Rally II steel wheels. So if these wheels are original, this car does not have the WS6 Performance Handling Package which included J65 4 wheel disc brakes in 1979, special shocks, larger sway bars, and improved steering ratio.

T Tops are aftermarket. The car wasn’t born with them.

How can you tell they are aftermarket T tops?

Factory T-tops don’t touch in the middle of the roof. This car has aftermarket C&C or American T-Tops which could be added by the dealer or owner after purchase.

Every time I see a 403 with the T/A 6.6 stickers I always wonder what else the owner has messed with.
