47K Mile Survivor: 1983 Lincoln Continental Mark VI

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

After the Mark series was reintroduced in 1968, it sold in pretty good numbers, outselling its biggest rival, the Cadillac Eldorado, from 1972 to 1979. Things changed in 1980. There was a recession that greatly affected all car sales. The Mark V sold 75,939 units in 1979 while the Mark VI sold 38,891 in 1980, and only 20,647 of those were 2 doors. In 1983, which this example is, there were only 12,743 two door Mark VI’s produced. This generation of Mark VI is basically very similar to the Continental/Town Car which adapted the Panther platform in 1980, shared with the LTD Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. This 1983 Continental Mark VI is for sale here on Craigslist in Ramsey County, Minnesota for $5,300.

We normally think of Mark series as being only two doors, but for the Mark VI generation, they were also offered in 4 door models. This example is a 2 door. To distinguish this car from the Continental/Town Car series, the Mark incorporated hidden headlights and slanted rear deck and taillights very similar to the Mark V. The most distinguishing feature as always was the imitation spare tire hump.

This car has the carriage roof and lacy spoke aluminum wheels. It has only been driven 47,000 miles. Although no engine pictures were provided, the seller tells us that it has new exhaust, EGR valve, plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets, and fuel injector regulator. The standard and only engine in 1983 was the 5.0 liter (302 cubic inches) V-8 with electronic fuel injection.

This appears to be the standard model rather than a Signature or the Pucci or Blass Designer series, but it still has a very luxurious interior. The white leather seats are in excellent condition. A standard feature found on this car is the power vent front windows.  This is not one of the most sought after Mark series models, but this car is in great condition and could make a nice addition to anyone’s garage at a reasonable price.

Obviously not a budget car back then, but looks like an expensive ride even today.

Not a fan of this generation of Lincoln’s, or the color combination, but at least it is not ridiculously priced, and the color does pop. Probably worth the money for someone who likes these cars.

Do you guys remember what is behind those huge headlight doors?

Two very small headlights that look out of place in that huge area.

I was always kind of funny to see.

I try to find something redeemable in every car, but I have never, ever, been able to appreciate the Lincoln Mk III through VI models. That front end is reserved for the architecture of government buildings.
(I will admit a soft spot for Mk VIIs, though.)

I love it. I’ve had VII and VIII LSC’s but you cannot beat the ride (glide) of these tanks. Wish I had a garage spot available. I also wish the power vent windows “twisted” rather than just going up n down, so they actually could force some air in. We have an old farm truck with proper “in & out” vent windows, and you barely need A/C.

Nice car at a reasonable price given the condition, but that red would take some getting used to… I do like the colour, but not on a formal car.

To hell with those comments, I love the car and the color, it is beautiful, and the ride is fantastic, it takes bumps beautifully … I had one and wish I could of found room to keep her, she was a beautiful, but whomever got her got a gem of a car, paint was beautiful, no dents anywhere on the car … everything worked and operated correctly, interior was perfect, I keep that car in great condition … I will never forgive myself that I did not keep the car… what a damn fool I was … but now, I realize that I want to buy another Mark VI now, soon, is this car still for sale?

I was a fresh young executive at Kelsey Hayes in 1970 when the president’s Mark II was made available and he was given a new Mark II. I enjoyed this car greatly. It started out as a test vehicle for the anti-skid system that it was equipped with. This was an $1,100.00 option. I used to test it when there would be a fresh snow fall in the morning and I was the first car to go down our street. I got it with `13000 miles on it and drove it until it had 100K and then the company gave me a 4 doot T bird that was to be the last one manufactured. A very loaded car and also anti-skid.
