51K Miles: 1987 Chevrolet Camaro Sport Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We’ve seen some nearly mint third-generation Camaros here on Barn Finds lately, but few (if any) of them have been base Sport Coupes like this one. It has no T-Tops. It has no ground effects. It doesn’t even have a V8. Yes, the familiar growl from this Camaro comes from Chevy’s long-lived but little-loved 60-degree V6. Still, a clean low-mileage third-gen is worth another look, and we have Mitchell G. to thank for finding this one.

The Chevy 2.8 was more commonly found rotated a quarter-turn clockwise and powering a Chevy Celebrity or something equally square. Although it’s not as much of a let-down as the “Iron Duke,” which was standard in the base Camaro from 1982 to some time in 1986, it doesn’t scream “Camaro” like a traditional Chevy small block would. With only 51,000 miles on it, however, there’s still a lot of life in this 135-horsepower “life of the mall parking lot.” And you see IROCs everywhere – how many Sport Coupes are left?

You’ll forget what’s under the hood when you open the driver’s door and see this almost-a-time-capsule interior. Aside from the cracked dash pad, every picture of the Camaro’s gut is a picture of the local Chevy dealer in 1987. I can almost smell it now, because I spent a lot of time at the Chevy dealer when I was a kid; I could ride my bike there, after all.

Now for the slightly less good part (maybe). Although the advertisement claims that the car is rust-free, I think I can see some bubbling and visible rust in the door jamb and quarter panel lip. The current owner apparently bought it from the original owner in 2017, and it’s obviously been babied, but it is for sale on Long Island, so there has to be a little rust, right?

Back to the interior: Look at the trunk. There have been no greasy cylinder heads, winter tires, used oil for recycling, or lawn mowers back here, so it’s clearly nothing that I have owned. The owner even has the original window sticker.

It seems as if I’m slowly talking myself into ’80s Camaro ownership because I’ve been seeing so many of them to write about here on Barn Finds. This silver Sport Coupe is just enough off-the-beaten-path that it appeals to my love of quirkiness, but it’s still a Camaro, so it’s cool. It’s currently on Craigslist for an asking price of $7500; it’s hard to tell if that’s in the right ball park because there are so few up for grabs. Please feel free to discuss what you think it’s worth while I try to resign myself to stop looking at ’80s Camaros for sale.

I had an 83 like this. Found it with a blown engine. Put a 400 SBC in it. Had giddy up then. Put the Z-28 suspension in, TH350.

Somewhere along the way, parts of this car have been repainted. The fenders and doors don’t match. I owned one 2.8l in an S-10, it was a new motor, gutless, and got crappy mileage because it was working so hard. Going from an auto to a 5-speed helped, but it was still anemic. I like Camaros, but I cannot imagine driving one with a 2.8 under the hood. 4.3 – yes, but not a 2.8.

Silver was the worst paint in 88. The fade and peel because of the formula.
