Patrick S sent this black beauty in for us to consider. It is a 1980 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 with only 66k miles over the last 40 years of its life. The Z/28 is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts and is listed here on eBay. The seller has it advertised as no reserve but that is not the case. It is listed with a Buy It Now Price of $21,990 and there is a Make An Offer option for any potential buyer. There are 26 days remaining in the auction. The car looks great with Code 19 black exterior and a matching black interior.
The seller states that the car retains its original 350 cubic inch V8 engine. For the Z/28, this was the only engine option available in 1980. This LM1 5.7 liter engine produced a sluggish 185 horsepower and 280 lb ft of torque from the factory. The top motor in the Mustang in 1980 was around 160 horsepower and the Pontiac Trans Am offered a 210 horsepower turbocharged V8. Chevrolet small block engines can be easily and inexpensively modified to make them fun to drive.
The car is claimed to be original and the interior looks immaculate. The car has the base interior which is unusual for a T-Top Camaro. The red carpet looks as nice as the day it left the factory! The car is equipped with factory T-Tops, steel factory Rally Wheels, power steering, power brakes and an automatic transmission. The car does not have air conditioning. I really like the optional aluminum wheels that were available on the Z/28 but these black steel wheels look good.
The second generation Camaro was produced from 1970 to 1981 and one of the cool features of the 1980 and 1981 Camaro Z28’s was the air induction hood scoop. The scoop had a flapper on the rear side of the scoop opened under full throttle to let cool air into the air cleaner. This car should be worth every penny of the asking price based on its condition.

Top Mustang engine in 1980 was the carbureted turbo 2.3-liter 4-banger with about 130 hp. That year’s small block V8 was down to 255 cu. in. and a paltry 122 hp. For 1982, Mustang GT got its 302 (5.0) V8 back with 157 hp, and it went up in following years.
Terrific looking car, but like flmikey said, no A/C in my part of the country is a deal killer. The automatic would be OK though. I’m too darned old to shift my own any more.
I would prefer a 4 speed but was 180 hp the automatic would be ok. no A/C is a plus to me.
I am the original owner of a 1980 Z-28. Its white with blue stripes and blue cloth interior. I got every option available except I ordered radio delete. The ’80 Z-28 came with 190 hp from the factory. Mine is original engine, automatic, and rear end. It’s a great car to own. I personally wouldnt want this black one because of low options and no air conditioning on an original car is definitely not good. But it looks nice.
Jeff, I agree. Of the 77-81 Z-28’s the 1980 model year is the one to have. The 350 with the air induction performed pretty damn good for the era.
I also have a 1980 z28 white with blue stripes and blue cloth interior with every option including power antenna and trunk release. I bought it in the early 1980’s from the original owner. It was a graduation gift for a high school girl when new. Oddly she wanted a 4 speed. So I guess it is missing the automatic trans option. Haven’t took the t-tops out in years. At the time t-tops was a big deal now I rather not have them.
I bought a 1980 z28 brand new in Feb/80, charcoal grey exterior, grey cloth interior, very minimally equipped with no a/c, no t-tops, or even power windows or locks. But it was a 4 speed car and had the only rear gear available that year with a 4 speed—3.08 ratio. I disconnected the air pump, removed the cats and ran true dual through the dual resonators.
Sounded very throaty and ran 15.01 at 93 mph in the quarter. Came through the eyes at 5500 rpm (500 over factory redline) in third gear, very respectable for the time for the era. Typical small block Chevy, let it breath and it’ll make rpm.

Not my favorite years by a mile but I really like this one in black with red stripes, the black wheels complete the bad dude appearance package.
In California I dont believe we had that air cleaner set up, either that or I just never paid attention to these when new [newer].
Never seen 1 of these loaded even with cruise control – & no a/c, tho it is in cool enough in Massachusetts – i think.
Odd the (silly IMO) black factory paint isn’t peeling off the chrome window moldings.
Did the air induction increase hp?
