80% Factory Paint: 1970 Datsun 510 Wagon

510

This is another one of those “what price for originality?” car questions. Yes, this Datsun 510 has mostly original paint, but one look at the tailgate has me contemplating a repaint.  But that’s me; I know a lot of you would try a lot to save the original paint. Take a look at the pictures and let us know how you would deal with this particular car. The little wagon is being sold here on eBay and is located in Opa-Locka, Florida. The starting bid is $4,500, which may seem pretty high, but it does include a lot of recent engine work. You’d better hurry though, the auction doesn’t have a lot of time left. Let us know what you think in the comments below. Thanks goes to Charles H. for this find!

This is a pretty cool find. Even though, the wagon was really nothing special ( had a live axle instead of the IRS of the sedan), but still, it was one of the early Datsun’s that showed Japan could build decent, reliable, economical cars. As with most other Asian cars of the time, they were serious rusters, and few survived. If I remember, the front shock towers would rust, deeming the cars undriveable. Older Asian cars, especially wagons, are gaining ( collectible) steam, only because so few are around today, and they were good cars.

Anyone trying to sell a car, or anything for that matter, should at least have the intelligence, or find someone who is, to post pictures in their proper perspective, not sideways, upside down , but anyway, sorry for the rant, neat old Datsun, original paint wouldn’t make me want this car any more then a proper re-paint. Peace,,,,,,,,, out.

No need to rush to the auction. It’s still zero bidders with slightly more than 3 hrs to go… Cool wagon though, as opposed to the Toyota featured the other day

4500 for a Datsun seems insane. I understand the rarity but wow. Bought a79 210 hatchback in 1991 for $450 from a tow yard. It was a wonderful first car. Learned the basics of pretty much everything on it and drove it into pile of rust. Ah memories….

*edit $4500 for a (non Z) Datsun seems insane.

Grant, have you seen the prices of the 510 coupes and sedans lately? Nothing decent for under $5k

I agree Jamie, that back hatch needs some work which might result in a major repaint. I do love seeing these old Japanese cars with rear wheel drive! Seller states that the head has been rebuilt, but in looking the pictures, it looks like the block may have been rebuilt as well.Good under body pictures; its a nice looking Wagon.

Tirefriar I totally have seen what 510s go for and it seems insane to me!!! I actually had a 510 a few years ago and apparently gave it away for $850. But it was beat to death too, so I felt like I did ok on it. I love Datsuns. Apparently those who grew up with them do too, lol.

I used to drive datsun trucks because I could buy them for $500 drive them into the ground and sell them for $800. Those times are gone. This one may be a little high, but I know wagons in general are hot right now and the 510s are on fire. I just purchased a 2 door 510 for a price I would have slapped myself for a few years ago., but at today’s prices was a steal.

Yep, cheap Datsuns are a thing of the past. I have owned multiple Datsuns, especially 510s both wagons and sedans. Used to be only the sporty 2 doors were worth anything. I loved them because parts interchange was like old Chevys. Anything Datsun is likely to fit. If you shop carefully there are still deals out there. But few and far between. Now 4 doors sell well, and the wagons are probably more popular than any of the sedans. Upgrade the power train and suspension, & Brakes from later model cars (240SX and 300ZX are popular donors) and you have a real hot rod on your hands.
I looked and auction ended with no bids, but i have seen worse wagons sell for more than that asking price so in current market conditions, thats not a crazy price at all.
