931 Package Deal: Pair of Porsche 924 Turbos

Finding a single version of a turbocharged Porsche 924 is one thing; finding a pair of them for sale is quite another. It just doesn’t happen all that often. The seller of these rare 931 Porsches notes he has owned them for a while and has too many projects in front of them to reasonably expect restoring the duo any time soon. These are projects for sure, and the 924s are missing some parts like the seats. The good news is aside from the lack of seating, they appear largely complete, and the black car comes with a title. Neither of the Porsches run, which isn’t the end of the world but also could make the projects more daunting given these weren’t the simplest cars to work on when new. Find the turbo Porsches here on craigslist with an asking price of $3,000.

The turbocharged 924s were seriously quick cars when new, and made the otherwise homely four-cylinders far more deserving of the Porsche crest. You could spot them from a mile away with the additional vents in the nose panel and the NACA duct to help with engine cooling and ventilation. In addition, slots in the front apron helped steer cool air to the brakes and air cooler. The black car is the one with the clear title, and it’s riding on non-standard Turbo wheels. However, the seller does mention he has a set of the correct Turbo-specific wheels to go with this car. As mentioned, the buckets seats are missing, perhaps due to the 924 being ordered with the incredibly rare OEM sport seats.

The other 924 rolls on its original wheels, which I always thought were a great look for the hot hatch. The turbocharged models also got the rear spoiler you see here, adding to the visual clues that this wasn’t a standard 924. The model was introduced as a way to close the space between the classic 911 and base model 924, which was a fairly sizable gap in terms of performance capabilities. This car did that and then some, actually offering a compelling alternative to a 911 if you were on a budget. With 177 b.h.p. on tap, it was no slouch – but it will be a while before you’re feeling the thrust of the turbocharger in this example.

It looks like there’s some missing paint on the hood, so perhaps this 924 Turbo got a quick respray at some point in the past. The fact that both cars are missing their seats – and only their seats – is a bit odd, unless the seller got insanely lucky and found two cars with the optional sport bucket seats. I’ve always felt the 931 Porsches were poised for a value jump given the respectable performance and rarity, but they can still be had quite cheaply in project form, as this listing shows us. Do you think this is a potential bargain, or is there too much work to be done to make it a smart buy even at this price?

I would think 3K for the pair is a fair price. The US version of the 924 turbo only had like 145hp with emissions and the 944 model with the new 2.5L engine had the same performance as the turbo. The 2L engine was pretty unrefined when compared to the 2.5 engine with its balance shafts. I always liked the looks of the 924 turbo with the NACA duct and the extra cooling above the bumper.

The same engine was available in the Gremlin late in its production life, sans fuel injection and built to looser tolerances. Part of the deal was that AMC was not permitted to say where it came from.

      I’d rather have the Gremlin.

Any Porsche that needs repair is one big money pit. To spend big bucks to fix a 924 (or two) is bordering on crazy, as it’s still the least desirable of the marque.

I always found these to be pretty intriguing. I’d drive one. I guess 3 g would be fair. I mean what else are you gonna get for that? You better be prepared to spend a ton of money and time and probably not get it back tho. These are in the territory where it makes a lot more economic sense to buy a low mileage nice one or one already done, unless you’re in it for the project.

These 931s in good condition are actually very collectible, of course they are usually low mileage ones.
