And now for part two of our look at some period soap box derby racers! This cart was called Greek Power II #44/28 and is available here on eBay with a starting bid of $799. This beautiful “golden rod” is a nice ride and with a little work, could be a winner again! And if this one is a bit too flashy, be sure to check out The Red Baron and a car that was sponsored by Nationwide Insurance below!
But first, let’s take a closer look at Greek Power II! There is some damage to the stream-lining on the rear axle and tail. There is also some body damage by the left side of the nose and the cockpit. The owner claims this is a National winning vintage derby car from the 1940’s and is fast as a “cat’s” or something to that effect.
And here is J84 “The Red Baron”, which is listed here on eBay for $500 OBO. The owner states that “The Baron” is from 1976 and in great condition. It raced at Kingston stadium back in the day. It will need a little work, but looks good overall!
This #A91 and is a 1960’s model listed here on eBay with a BIN price of $595.99. The owner’s brother built this in 1967 and raced for 2 years. He was a sponsored driver by Nationwide Insurance. The car has been in the barn for 45 years, we know that story! So did you ever race a soap box derby car? If so, were you also a “sponsored driver”? What happen to your ride? Is it time to list it or display it? Perhaps there will have to be more parts to this series! Of course, that might just depend on if any of you have one of these cars that you’d like to share with us. If so, be sure to send us some photos!
Cheers,
Robert
Soapbox derby cars are usually pretty easy to identify based on how the rule book was changing.
1. The gold car is a senior from the 1974-77 range and looks like a really well done one. It is missing the cockpit cover.
2. The red one is a junior division kit car
I still have my car which was a state champ car from 1976 as well as my brothers champ car from 81 and one other car. The hard part is building a barn to display them.

Congratulations to both of you! Any pictures you would like to share would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Robert
Are you guys getting bored with real cars?
Nope, we just like some variety! Plus we cut our automotive teeth on things like Big Wheels, soap box derby cars and bicycles so they hold a special place in our hearts!
ok. here I am in 1977 at Derby downs. I ran some rally races with it in the fall of that year and then my dad put it in the attic. Looks exactly the same which is going to be nice when I actually have a place to display it one of these days.
