UPDATE – The seller has added a new video of the car running. Be sure to take a look at it below!

By 1974, most of the iconic Muscle cars had gone away. Between emission laws and rising fuel costs, manufacturers were essentially forced to stop producing some of their most popular models. Thankfully, a few did their best to keep the party alive. This 1973 Dodge Challenger is one of those holdouts and while the big block options were gone, there were still some performance options available to keep things fun! This Top Banana Yellow Challenger was purchased by the seller in 1978 and they have enjoyed it ever since. That being said, the seller has realized it’s time to move it along so someone else can have some fun with it, so they’ve listed it here as a Barn Finds Auction. Given what it is, its history, and its condition, we sent one of our professional photographers to take additional photos and it really does look like an amazing find!

Over the past 45 years, the seller has taken great care of this Challenger. About 8 years ago, it was starting to show its age, so they had it restored to breathe new life back into it. It’s still presenting beautifully inside and out. During their tenure, they’ve done a few upgrades to give it the kind of performance it should have had when new. The 340 V8 is the matching numbers block but has been upgraded. Power is sent through a 3-speed automatic and a 3.91 Sure Grip rear-end, so acceleration is brisk!

In ’73, engine options were limited to the 318 or the 340 V8. With power output rated at just 240 hp from the 4-barrel 340, performance certainly wasn’t what it had been just a few years prior, but since there was a high-performance version of the 340 in prior years, there are lots of bolt-on upgrades that will restore some of the engine’s performance. This car has received the Six Pack carburetor setup with the 340 T/A, as well as the T/A style fiberglass hood. You will also find a set of exhaust headers, which frees up some power and gives it a great sound. As you can see in the video below, the engine runs nicely. The original hood is still with the car, so you can put it back to original if so desired. While it’s hard to say how much power the engine produces now, but it’s definitely more than it did in 1973!

The interior was refreshed during the restoration and looks good. The shifter has been moved from the column to the floor. It’s equipped with the Rallye gauges, so you get a 150 mph speedometer and a full array of instruments. The dash panel and gauges all appear to be original and in good order. The stereo is missing, but a replacement should be easy to source.

The fact that this is a two-owner car that has been with the seller for so long is a huge plus in our book! The fender tag confirms that this is a Rallye optioned carThey’ve clearly enjoyed it and the upgrades that have been made should make this a very fun machine to drive. It could use a little work to make it perfect, but honestly, it’s ready to drive as is. So, if you’ve been on the hunt for a Top Banana Yellow Challenger, look no further! The fact that this is a long term owner sale makes this go from 70k to 90k in my mind. Even with a 318, I would love this BANANA BEAST

    The VIN says 1972.

My apologies! That’s a typo. I must have entered a 2 instead of a 3 while entering it into our system. The trim tag is shown at the bottom of the gallery and confirms that it’s a ’73. I’ve corrected the number in the listing.

Now THIS IS IT! ALLthe right stuff.
It’d cause crowds here in Munich of admiring folk.
    I’ve seen 1 in the decades here a 318.
There’s a few dressed up in the North from R&D classics but down here nope.
The fact its the 340 6pack makes it a very FUN car.
Not original in any way IMHO.
I think it’d need a mid body side marker light & that’s it to make TUV requirements.
    Price? 70k easy
It needs a stereo nothing like a vintage Jensen Cassette/radio w/period correct sound boost w/matching Under rear deck Jensen speakers & in door panels.
    Blasting old school hard Rock.
Now I’d have to build a roller skate 🛼 burger joint & a Drive in Movie theater to complete the Dream Night cruise.
All right all right all right

Does the owner still have the original rally rims? And do they come with the car?

My 340 duster always whipped the 6pak cars.
