A Whole Lotta Car: 1960 Cadillac 4-Door Hardtop

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1960 Cadillac 4-Door Hardtop is listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, it has a clear title. The seller has listed in with a BIN of $8,950 but there is an option to make an offer.

Apparently this Cadillac has been in storage, but the seller doesn’t mention how long for. Unfortunately it has been the recipient of some tough love over the years, but it seems to have weathered it fairly well. It does appear that the passenger side has copped the worst of it. There is obvious rust in the bottom of the front fender, although it doesn’t look that bad. Apparently there is the same on the driver’s side but not as bad. At some stage somebody has disguised this with a coat of house paint, but the seller has removed this to ensure that any potential buyers are aware of it. The bottoms of both doors on the passenger side look a little odd to me. I’m not sure whether the front door is dented, if there may be rust starting to appear, or whether the coat of house paint has extended to the bottoms of the doors and it has just deteriorated. The other piece of bad news is that at some stage someone has used the car for target practise with a BB gun. This has resulted in the door glass on both front doors having bad cracks in them. Apparently there is also a small chip on the right rear door from the same source.

The interior needs some work, but it could be used “as is”. the cover on the front seat is torn and also looks like it might be suffering from sun rot. The rear seat looks really good, and the door trims also look okay except for the fact that someone has relieved all four door trims of their emblems. A couple of the armrests will also need restoration or replacement. The headliner is quite stained and has a couple of tears in it, while the dash pad is also cracked. The dash itself appears to be intact and in good condition, but the steering wheel is cracked in several places.

That’s the 390ci engine sitting there backed by the Hydra-Matic transmission. The engine starts and runs okay, but it needs an exhaust. The generator has also been replaced with an alternator and the carburetor has been replaced but the air cleaner is missing.

There’s no doubt that this represents a lot of car for your dollar. It probably isn’t quite as desirable as the previous model with the bigger fins and the bullet tail-lights, but being a 4-door hardtop still makes it a cool car. It appears as if this car might be able to be turned into a driver with a mechanical check-up, a new exhaust and the replacement of those damaged windows. If you were to hit the road in this car there is no doubt that you would have a presence wherever you went.

How can I get my cars for sale listed free like the ones in Santa Teresa and El Paso???. You feature nearly everyone of these cars from the same car lot

This wouldn’t be a bad project, although I like the Flat-Top 4-door hardtops better. You wouldn’t want to ride any distance in the back seat of this car on a sunny day.

Somewhere in the world, there must be a huge stash of air cleaners that have not been reinstalled on the cars they were removed from.

I’d get it running properly and it would be my daily driver through the
work week, and my cruiser at Old Town on weekends. My neice and I
just left there not long ago. While there, I saw a heavily rustinaed ’71
Ford pickup running a 390 with a 3/4 race cam and headers. It had
also been lowered considerably and wore mag wheels and very wide
rubber. Just drive and enjoy it as you fix it up. After all, if restos are
    righteous, then beaters are neater!

The first car I ever owned was a ‘60 Cadillac Series 62 flat top, white with a blue interior. These were tanks, great for highway cruising, not so good on the chicanes. I would drive it on the Pennsylvania Turnpike every weekend to go visit my girlfriend in Harrisburg – her father keep telling me to get a VW “beetle”, he said it was a sensible, economical car.

I saw one of these 4-doors at a car show a few years back, and I was staggered by the sheer size of the thing. It was awesome! I would love to see an old documentary showing this car being assembled; given the size and weight of the components, it must have been quite a feat to build a number of these each day.

This model is the lesser-seen entry-level 4dr. DeVille, minus the nicer interior and power windows and seats. However, it has the much-desired turbine-veined rims that were available on Cadillacs from `56 to `58. Hopefully the seller has the missing center caps for these. This `60 is very savable, and IMHO worth the cost to restore. I always liked the rear styling of the `60 models over the `59s, because they were more restrained and in better taste for the era.

The entry level model this year was called the “Series 62”. The deVilles were the middle trim level, below the Fleetwood and Eldorado.

One of my favorites. A logical progression from the styling of the ’59 model. Still plenty of mid-century American excess, but refined.

By all accounts this car looks enormous, but they’re actually roughly comparable in size to a modern Chevy Suburban.

I believe the are called 6 window sedans. All 4 door Cadillacs, in this era, were hardtops.

The wheels are the Eldorado Sabre aluminums. If complete with caps worth a couple thousand. I tried to find a good set for what I felt was reasonable money for several years for my 59 Coupe De Ville. Finally gave up, sold the car a little later on
