Affordable Muscle? 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ 428

This gorgeous triple black 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix is being sold at no reserve. The car is located in sunny Pompano Beach, Florida and has been bid up to $12,189. The auction ends on Saturday and is listed here on eBay. Pontiac built the Grand Prix from 1962 through 2008. John DeLorean was the head of Pontiac and was instrumental in the redesign of the second generation Grand Prix that stunned the automotive world upon its release. The Grand Prix was built on a stretched A body frame and designated as a G Body. Sales almost quadrupled from 1968 to 1969 as buyers flooded Pontiac showrooms in 1969.

The 1969 Grand Prix stunned the automotive world when it was introduced. In addition to its great looks as a personal luxury car, Pontiac made sure that it generated some excitement with an optional 428 cubic inch V8 engine. For those who are curious, that is 7.0 liters of ground-pounding torque. The seller states that this car has its original, numbers matching engine fed through a 4 barrel carburetor. The engine was rebuilt and is backed by a Turbo 400 automatic transmission.

The black bucket seats look original and a little frumpy. While the carpet and dash look good the console lid cover is cracked. The seller states that the factory air conditioning blows cold and, of course, this luxury car is equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows and rear defrost.

The awesome factory mounted hood tachometer is still in place and in working condition. The glass looks good and all the lights and gauges are working.

This is one of the best angle of the car. It shows the long hood and short deck architecture. The Grand Prix has dual exhaust and the black vinyl roof looks to be in great shape. While the odometer states that it has 20k miles, I would imagine that it has been around the block once.

Too much to wish for a third pedal…but still an awesome driver.

The 4 speed was a factory option in 69. Barn Finds wrote about a 4 speed “parts car” 69 Grand Prix recently. Rust bucket, in Alaska, but it had the trans and linkage.

I have always loved these early GP’s, and you really got me with the hood tach. I had no idea that these were available on this Pontiac, but then again I never claimed to be an expert. This car really set the stage for the coming of long hoods short trunks of many future models. Very nice car and priced accordingly., wish it was mine

I wonder if that car was ordered in Ohio, because that looks a lot like my uncle’s Pontiac. He only had it a year or two, really makes me wonder…..

I don’t remember tachometer on Grand Prix back then, I do remember on Firebirds, on the hoods .

Pontiac pretty much offered it across the line at one point, even on full size cars some years.

This was a driver’s car. Love how the dash and console wrap around the driver, isolating the front seat passenger.

Definitely not the original steering wheel. Don’t know why car owners do that.

Beautiful condition and a 428, I’m hooked. Late 60s cross country tourer.

I’m feeling my oats today, no comment from Ray L on how stupid this car is? A gas guzzler? People in the South Pacific wouldn’t like it? Makes me more appreciative of Steve R, Miguel, Howard A, geomechs, Troy S and everyone else…

I wonder if it is the 370 or 390 horse 428.

If I had the money I would definitely be bidding on this one. Always one of my favorite cars as I owned a 1969 SJ with the 428-370 as my first car at age 19-20 in 1977-78. Lots of great memories and burnt rubber.
