Another Fairlady: 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster

One year ago today we featured a 1964 Datsun Fairlady here. Today we have a 1969 model for you that is parked in Chester, New York. This 1969 Datsun Roadster 2000 Fairlady is listed here on eBay with a BIN of $3,695.

According to the seller, this Datsun can be “yard-driven” as-is. This Datsun is powered by the factory 2000 cc engine running through the 5-speed gearbox. Could this be a good start to a project?

It appears that all the gauges are present. We do not know the condition of the gauges or the radio.

The seller says that the frame is in good condition with the exception of the rear 6″. There are more images of the underside in the ad, so be sure to take a closer look.

It appears that a trusty can of spray paint has been in use here. Hopefully some rust inhibitor was used, especially on the soft spots. They will still have to be repaired or replaced, but it it could have kept the rust from spreading. Besides rust, the buyer also gets the hard and soft tops. Do you like the twin portholes? This Fairlady has a Wisconsin plate on the rear and the car comes with a clean Illinois title(?).

The seller says that the rockers, driver’s side quarter panel and the driver’s floor panel will need some attention. We think that the buyer may wish to give the front-end some attention as well. The seller can delivery for a fee and asks you to call if you have any questions. If you have been looking for one or just decided you want a Datsun 2000 Roadster, please review the ad and ask your questions. These are rare and to have one that can be yard-driven is a great start. If you happen to buy this Fairlady, please let us know!

Motor-on,
Robert

not sure on buy it now price, although runs and yard drives according to the ad, it does need everything. I looked at sellers other items, and they are mostly Camaro and Firebird/TA parts. I like the body style, and you don’t see them that often, so could be a good project for someone into Japanese or sports cars.

These Fairlady Datsuns are probably one of the best choices in the Japanese classic car market. The later 2000s are especially entertaining to drive quickly This one does have a need to have the bottom of the car cut off to repair it properly. These are built very much like an MGB, but with less rust resistant steel. I believe Nissan and the aftermarket are making these panels and replacement parts available again. The only other caveat is that they are ‘snug for taller and wider drivers. In any case, I expect the market for these to rise very quickly -30 to 50K in the time it takes duffers like me to bring these kinds of cars to show ready.

A hidden value for collector cars to come. Two liter engine, five speed all synchro, and can be bought for under five or six thousand. I have two and they are a wonderful car to drive, well balanced and pretty peppy. I am currently looking for a two Venturi manifold that was the option for the 160 engine. Any body has one available let me know.

These are the better choice among the Datsun Roadsters for driving because of the 2 liter engine and the 5-speed, but I can’t see this Wisconsin/NY car being a good choice compared to an unrusty, or at least much less rusty Western car. There is too much rust perforation and damage to the interior for me. I would wait for a better one and pay more for it.

The 2016 SCM Guide just came out and the 2000 Roadsters get some strange numbers. The median and high sale prices for the 1600 are $11.6K and $50.6K, but the numbers for the 2000 are only $7.1K and $10.8K. All prices are for excellent cars.

So the market prefers the 1600 even though the 2000 has a better drivetrain. You won’t be able to bring the car featured here back for what it would be worth in the SCM Guide.

too much work to make it a driver and to much money for a parts car. the seller is taking offers so this car could be use to keep others on the road. interesting find.

I like this car and the two litre with the 5 spd all synchro make it that much more desirable. Only fly in the ointment is that I am 6’4″ and it sounds like that’s not on. Otherwise I’d be willing to make this look good and drive it even if it didn’t make financial sense.

Too bad about it being a tall windshield. I think earlier years had short windshields that looked a lot better. Still beautiful cars.

The drivetrain is what is valuable on this. 68 and newer Roadsters are less desirable in general because of the high windscreen and plastic dash. The best is the 67.5 2000.
