Baby Got Back: 1968 Ford Fairlane 500 Fastback

032316 Barn Finds - 1968 Ford Fairlane 1

This good-looking 1968 Ford Fairlane 500 Fastback is listed on craigslist with an asking price of $6,500. This is a big car, at least big-looking, but it’s only about 8″ longer than a 2016 Ford Fusion.

This car lives in El Paso, Texas, right where that big, free wall is going to be. It looks like it’s in nice shape but the bumper must have smooched with something at some point and, of course, the paint will have to be cut-and-buffed at least to remedy the hot, Texas sun damage. This is the sixth generation Fairlane and it was only made for 1968 and 1969. I prefer the previous generation Fairlane with the stacked headlights, the “Dragnet” version. (Pay no attention to the image on the right, if that’s even remotely possible)

Ahhhh yeeeee’uh! There’s that Kardashian-like booty. Actually, this one isn’t even that big, but this is a shapely body, as well. This could be a great car in these colors and if the stripe was maybe redone a bit. Not that it’s bad now, I would just try to clean it up and drive it as is. This looks like Ford’s Acapulco Blue to me. There are no interior photos and the seller says that it’ll need work in there. And, there are no photos of the 210hp 302 V8 that sits in the front of this beauty, but the seller says that it’s a “good motor” as are the brakes. They also mention that there is “very little rust” on this car. Are you a fan of these bigger Fastback Fairlanes or are you stuck in the Dragnet?

I’m a Ford guy, but I have trouble with this body style. Its just so huge in the back! They did better with the Torino, but I still wouldn’t mind having the car. Looks pretty solid, it would be nice to have some interior shots though

This is exactly the same body as the ’68-69 Torino. Trim is the only difference.

I’m with you on the stacked headlight version before this one, Scotty. After having a ’68 Mustang GT I never could get too worked up about another fastback except the Galaxie 500 XL. From a service standpoint the small block is a lot easier to work on in this body style than an FE motor. Those upper shock towers give about as much clearance as a Zig Zag cigarette paper. Nice car just the same.

I always liked the 68 / 69 Fairlane / Torino fastback.. Lots of room and somewhat stylish with that sloped back end..

This one would be a keeper, but it’s gonna need some work. The Texas sun beats a car up same as here in Fla.

    Nice find,, Nice car.

I would offer him 5K then try to put a shine on that paint, put a set of decent wheels and tires on it, do whatever to get interior in livable shape then use it as a daily driver.

I always liked this style. I’ve always wondered why Craigslist posters often take minimal or marginal quality photos.

    It’s….a….free….ad.

You can take up to 24 and it’s no more difficult than taking 3.

Better Pics = Less dumb phone calls and emails;-)

    That is all…

I had a ’68 Mercury Cyclone GT……390 + C6 automatic, same body just had Mercury trim……….The car would give the 428 Cobra Jets all they could handle……lol

Hi Erik. I think that a Fairlane is a lot more romantic place to lose ‘IT’ than a Toyota pickup. Go with pride my boy!

These fastback intermediates, love them or hate them, were slick as hell on Nascar tracks (Grand National Champions 1968/69). I consider them the result of Ford’s total performance mission to dominate Nascar (like Mustang in Can Am and GT-40 in Gran Prix racing).

They won races without the benefit of front or rear spoilers, unlike the winged Dodge Daytona and Superbird. And those 66/67 Dodge Charger fastbacks were terrible race cars….too much lift in the rear!

There is something about the finer lines of the talladega that make this body style more pleasing to the eye. Nice pic Bryan.
