If the “Back to The Future” movie franchise has taught us nothing else, it has taught us that the much-maligned DeLorean DMC-12 was a car capable of far greater feats than the illustrious Mr. DeLorean ever envisaged. Dr. Brown’s famous vehicle drove on and off road, traveled through time, rode on train tracks, and flew through the air. However, for all of these achievements, there was still one frontier that it didn’t tackle…until now. This DeLorean can hold its own on the water, and you will find it listed for sale here on eBay. It is located in San Francisco, California, and it can be yours for an asking price of $45,000, although the option is there to make an offer. A big thanks must go out to Barn Finder Dirk P for spotting this one for us.
Being serious for a moment. This really is a fully functioning hovercraft. The body was sculpted from foam by the owner. This was then covered with a fiberglass skin, which was then painted silver to match the finish on the original DeLorean DMC-12. The attention to detail is quite impressive, even the famous gull-wing doors operate. If you don’t believe that this vehicle actually operates, you can see it in action on this YouTube video.
The interior is pretty basic, and it’s obviously all waterproof. There are some nice little details, like the DeLorean badge on the dash. The switch panel in the center controls the ignition on the two engines and also has a switch to operate the Flux Capacitor.
The DeLorean is powered by two separate engines. There is a 36″ thrust fan, which is powered by a 23hp Briggs & Stratton engine while lifting power is provided by a 24″ fan powered by a Briggs & Stratton 875 Series engine.
This DeLorean hovercraft is a bit of fun, but it is an expensive toy. However, it is something so different and unique that I couldn’t resist writing about it. We’ve seen a few amphibious cars on Barn Finds, but this is a vehicle that offers the new owner a lot of fun and adventures…and it really works.
Lurks just to count flux capacitor and 88MPH (what’s that in knots?) comments
81kts
This is silly………but John DeLorean was into several other industries (other than Cocaine) I own a snow cat that was built after he bought Thiokol in northern Utah. It is called DMC…..now LMC under new ownership.
I’ve seen this in action doing donuts in the sf bay. The thing hauls balls and if you want to make a splash at your next water themed party, look no further-
It’s actually 76.5 kts
Beyond awesome.
I owned a hovercraft in highschool it had a 55 hp 2 cylinder JLO 2 stroke engine, it was lightweight everything, on land or did just about close to acceptable, but not quite and on water it was worthless for anything but taking a shower. THIS machine had better one heck of a good design because it sure weighs more doesn’t have much more HP? I don’t mean to be a pessimist but I have my doubts in this config?
IT may technically be a hovercraft since it has no wheels and somewhat floats on the surface but not by much. I suspect it to be somewhat underpowered and that a more powerful engine might make it work a little better.
