Bargain Wagon: 1963 Ford Galaxie Country Sedan

This 1963 Galaxie Country Sedan can be found here on craigslist in Kansas City, Missouri. Offered at $1,500, the photos reveal a relatively straight body with most of the bright trim still installed and minor rust. The color combination is white over red, which is generally a hit with most sixties car fans.

This car is not without its challenges though. The seller says the engine is locked up and that he doesn’t “have all the tools needed to fix it”, whatever those might be. He also says it comes with two gas tanks but he doesn’t know whether either is usable.

If he is unable to determine whether a gas tank is usable or not, then offering this car for sale is the right thing to do. It doesn’t sound or look like he has done much to this car and that is probably a good thing. I’m sure I’d request a photo or two of the engine before driving out to see it, although it wouldn’t be the end of the world even if it were missing entirely.

The other challenge is the condition of the interior. The seller doesn’t mention whether or not he has any of the door cards. I found reproduction seat covers and door panels for Galaxie sedans elsewhere online, but no stuff for the wagon. This would of course require further research as the rear doors on many sedans are different than the wagons. The dash looks pretty good, but with possible damage around the area formerly occupied by the ignition switch.

This photo of the tailgate area is probably intended to show the rust damage, which at least by Midwestern standards, isn’t too bad. The Missouri license plate reveals that this car has been off the road and away from the salt since the mid-1980s.

Vintage station wagons are almost always a hit here on Barn Finds. This one, with a straight body and most trim, will still present challenges with minor body work needed along with the interior and drivetrain. So what do you think, is $1,500 the right price for this project car?

This should sell fairly quickly with the FE engine on board.

Sadly, this car is pretty shot. Rusty floor means rusty frame. With that left front tire painted like that, might be getting it ready for a demo derby, ( wagons being the car of choice) unless that’s how far it was sunk in the mud.

Pure conjecture. Rusty floor pans do not mean rusty frame. I have one of these with some floor pan rust but the frame is rock solid. Why knock down a car you haven’t seen in person?

The wagon is a Country Sedan, and not a Country Squire. The Squire had a dy-noc woodgrain decal down both side and across the tailgate. As a non running, and dismal interior condition it is worth about $1525 + add about $75 more for the 352 engine. Car is priced in the ballpark. I’m guessing it could be had for around 1350 or so. I’m thinking that the part about the tools is a lack of a ring compressor, engine hoist and stand, a way to lap the valves in etc.

Anybody who thinks they’re looking at a Country Squire hasn’t studied Fords for more than five minutes. Hell, it even says “COUNTRY SEDAN” right on it.

I suspect the markings on the wheel and door mean it was in a salvage yard. It was marked to save when the crusher arrived!

Love the torque converter parking brake. Had a few of these over the years. They were prone to rusted tops just above the drip rails. Asking price pretty good, would make a good parts car. I see it has a power rear window. This is the last one I had a few years ago….

Sorry. Pic upload not working. The fuel tank issue is a pretty big deal as they are not repopping these for the wagons. My latest 63 had a fuel cell installed where the stock tank was. Fit really well and was about 13 gallons if I remember right. Another thing to look out for on these is the factory 15 inch Kelsey Hayes wheels (heavy duty option) these wheels were shared with the 427s and early GT350s and are worth a lot.

      They should be 15″x 6.5″

Thank you. I hope it’s not the wheels I put salt licks in for the horses and cows. If they are, I might could sell them to the folks that bought the rust356 and VW rustvan.

There is no minor rust on this puppy when it needs floor pans.. My bet is the roof is tissue paper thin.. Other than that, it’s do-able..

I completely disagree with your comment about the roof. Most of the paint is there, and there is some minor patina surface rust. There is no indication of major roof rust

Sorry about misidentifying this car. Not sure how we let that slip by. Thanks for pointing it out though.

Did anyone get a contact number on this one? I checked CL and the listing expired.
