Barn Find! 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible

Chevrolet Chevelles are some of the most beautifully designed cars to come out of the muscle car era. The second generation Chevelles ran from 1968 to 1972 and were some of the kings of the street. This 1969 convertible can be found here on eBay with an asking price of $9,800. Located in Morris, Connecticut, the car was a true barn find and was stored for twenty years before being pulled out of hiding! Thanks to Adam C. for the tip on this Chevelle.

Unfortunately, there are only two photos in the ad. Perhaps the seller wants to leave the actual condition of the car as a bit of a mystery? Maybe they want to generate calls inquiring about more photos? Call me crazy, but asking nearly $10,000 for a car and only having one decent photo in the ad is a little perplexing.

Here is a taste of what this car has the potential to look like. The ad does state that a restoration was begun before the car was parked in the barn. Hopefully, the car is as-described and it finds a new home where it can be completed and reach its full potential. Do you think this car will sell for nearly five figures?

    When the sellers says the body isn’t fully bolted down and that it will save work for the restoration, which is a new one, I hope that doesn’t mean the mounting points have rusted away.

    Hmm no eng body work to be done but does have the 4 speed….Not an expert–might be worth the coin.Steve R is correct on the mounting points-
    seen a few rusted out frames where the rubber body mounts are- must be a place for the moisture to sit. Would need a real good rust inspection,

    A 1969 Malibu would have horizontal molding front to back at the lower body line. Below this trim paint color is silver. The wheel well openings on a Malibu would not have the bright trim,the blue car is a SS and would have them. Fender emblems look like 307 motor, with a 4 speed that would be a unusual combination, possible yes, I’ve never seen that combination. Inspect carfuly (pun) .

      I questioned the 4-speed/307 combo, too – but apparently it was available. There’s a copy of the Chevrolet spec. sheet in the link below. It’s a bit difficult to read, but the transmission/axle ratio chart is in the last box down. You have to read the available combinations in relation to the engines in the box above…

        Back in 72 I had a friend who had a 1969 307/4 speed Chevelle. Not a Malibu. Brown with white buckets. Transmission was Saginaw with Saginaw crappy shifter and 3.08 open differential. It was a dog, but somebody had ordered it that way and decided they could not live with it. Was a nice looking car and he loved it

      Yes. It’s easier to look at the pictures than try and accurately describe the differences in writing. The trunk lid might interchange, but no other sheet metal will.

    Wikipedia says 68/72 same gen.
    Must be same frame.
    Body’s are different.

    Jim ,if you were to pull the skin , bumpers ,and interior from the 68-72 model you would find most parts left to be the same or need a expert to show the changes.

    Tail lights and the rear body work around them are different between a 68 & 69, Same with the front end. Totally different grill and surrounding body parts. The interiors and instrument panels are different as well. just google some pictures and its obvious.
    However the 1st thing you do with one of these is get a factory workshop manual, Then the factory Chassis Overhaul manual, the Fisher Body manual, and Helpful to also source the factory assy instructions manual. They make them and now reprints for each year made. They have the illustrated parts diagrams with part numbers and show the order of assy.
    Then you go thru the car and take notes of what is correct, and what is not and whats missing.
    These manuals are EXCELLENT,, We have these manuals for every year build I have done,, Chevrolet being Chevy,, LOTS of parts carry over or interchange so, it IS possible a part for a station wagon might fit your car. But depending on what was ordered for the car many variables and sub assys change or were different. Without the manuals its just guessing.
    We have a 68 Malibu & 69 Malibu. Unless you are an expert, it can be challenging restoring one, but then restore, rebuild or restomod?? There is a long list of sensible upgrades and performance parts,, Such as aftermarket disc kits, A arms that improve geometry, Sway bar kits, Body and suspension bushings, Boxed rear section arms, Improved Power steering boxs, etc etc..
    There is no reason to live with substandard brakes and suspension, So sensible to upgrade.
    This car would need a boots on the ground FPI before I did anything, But being a convertible,, Its worth money, Just depends on condition. East Coast cars are a different kettle of fish than a west coast car, and priced accordingly.

    ** It seems you can now download such manuals off of websites, I prefer a hard copy I can use in the workshop myself, but you can print them out. In the past I stock up at swap meets for these manuals, But you can try here…….

    I went thru and made up a file folder on parts, upgrades and everything we need for our cars. Plus good feedback on vendors, products and follow others builds and advice on tech issues. Be very hard to come up with something new not already covered.

    I have almost the exact same car.had it since 1980..has been through a frame off and still runs..always garaged in Wisconsin..I can send pics if you want..ps…..not for sale…it’s my retirement plan !! 😀😀😁😂

    I bet it was a 3-speed car and not 4-speed. Totally crappy pictures. Always amazed how little of effort many folks pout into marketing something when it is so easy with all the technology available.

    Yes, Doug. I’m guessing it was a three speed. The 307 CI was a short-lived DOG of a small block. Didn’t it come from a 283? This is not the way to move any car. Mother Waddles would need more info before excepting this bag of parts. Matching numbers?? Who cares!

    3 pictures added, the inside of the trunk. Looks like some rust, photos are poor in my opinion. On site inspection is the only way to see how far the rust has spread.
