None of us have a crystal ball, but we can all say with some degree of certainty that we may leave this earth with some projects left unfinished. That’s basically the essence of estate sales like these, which shine the light on one property with a variety of unfinished sports cars left behind. This listing is for a 1966 Austin Healey 3000 BJ8 that is surprisingly complete despite never being restored, but it is still every bit of a restoration project. The seller reports that it is very rusty and has been kept in a leaky barn. Find it here on eBay with bids to $3,150 and no reserve.
I actually made a commitment to getting some of my long-standing projects done this year. I’m personally tired of them living in limbo-land while other projects get in the way. So, bodywork is commencing and the junkyard find Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 will finally be painted and more or less done this year. Life has had other plans time and again that stood in the way of making meaningful progress, and I’m sure this owner was still alive, he would echo the sentiment. He certainly had good instincts in terms of socking away some very desirable British tin.
And what a shame it is to lose this particular car when you see this interior. Can you imagine how stunning it must have been? The wood trim still hanging onto the glove box door is another reminder of how handsome British roadsters are when the leave the factory; sadly, they don’t take kindly to poor storage and years of neglect. The seller pulls no punches in the listing when describing how rotten the car is, from the body to the floors and seemingly everything in between. The top frame is still hanging on but obviously, the leaky barn has done away with the top material.
Still, this is a very complete car. Unlike some restoration projects that linger, the previous owner clearly didn’t start parting these cars out while holding onto that last shred of hope that he’d get around to the rebuild. Still, it’s sad to see once-grand dreams turn to this, and we hope that the next owner can either build a better project car into a runner, or somehow justify bringing this long-forgotten roadster back to life. Do you think it has a shot at redemption or is this Austin Healey too far gone?
Tough call on this one. The underside is going to still be sound or it’s going to be a disaster. You can get frames and bodies for these cars but you might as well go buy a complete, running car for what it’s going to cost to do anything with this car.

Great opening Jeff – great writing!
I think you just wrote my epitaph.
Reid, you are too kind given the condition. I have a good spare BN4 engine and rebuilt tranny/od and could not bring myself to bite
I could never understand owners like this. Unless this guy got this car in a poker game, when he was 75 years old? He’s directly responsible for this car going back to the earth. How sad.
How do you spell PATHETIC. now it the offer is to pay me to take this mess away and they will ship it, I am glad to help. as far as this belonging to a classic car collector…..Really??
where is it located?
Check the listing, Ohio rust bucket, he’s got 2, I need parts for a 3000 project, might go down and have a look, seller admits might be only good for parts.
Once again, agree with bobhess.
