Barn Find Project: 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

This 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is listed here on Barn Finds Classifieds. The seller lists 10 mechanical problems and 6 cosmetic problems with the car. While the pictures look nice, it is refreshing to find a seller who discloses both the good and the bad things on an internet listing. The car was originally Chesterfield Brown but was repainted at some point in Code 75 Red. The car is located in Elkridge, Maryland and is listed for $7,000.

The interior indicates that the car was ordered with a deluxe tan interior which meant the buyer received upgraded seats and door panels. The car appears to have a modern stereo in the dash and aftermarket speakers cut into the console. The seats are starting to tear at the seams and the console lid cover is a failing repair of the factory lid. The car appears to have power windows, power locks, rear defrost, T-Tops and air conditioning.

The Trans Am sits on aftermarket wheels and, after being stored for such a long time, it will need new tires. the seller states the car will come with the factory honeycomb wheels. There is no mention of the engine size except that it is a 6.6 liter. The 1978 Trans Am could be ordered with the base L78 400 cubic inch V8 engine, a L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engine or a W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine. the L78 was factory rated at 180 horsepower, the L80 Olds motor was factory rated at 185horsepower and the W72 Pontiac engine was rated at 220 horsepower. All three engines had similar torque ratings.

The seller states that the car will need the floorboard replaced due to rust and rot probably from leaking T-Tops or harsh salt covered roads. The fenders and quarter panels will also need rust repair. The car looks like it has not been registered as there are no plates on the car. The seller notes “This is a project vehicle which will take a fair amount of work to get to the point where it can be a daily driver.” I hope it gets back on the road soon.

Seems like a decent deal from an honest seller.

Honesty is a rare commodity anymore. Fix a few things and you’d have a beautiful car to daily drive.
