Barn Poncho: 1967 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

1967 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

This large Poncho is located in Armada, Michigan and is for sale here on craigslist for $6,900 obo with a “motivated seller.” Thanks to Robert R for alerting us to this find! After 20 years in a barn, there’s some corrosion showing on the edges, especially around the right rear wheel well, but there are some good things as well. Since its removal from the barn, fuel lines, brake lines and front end components have been replaced. The seller further states that it runs and drives, and with a 400 cubic inch v-8, I’ll bet it runs quite nicely.

1967 Pontiac Catalina Convertible Interior

It’s encouraging to see the interior looking so nice, and I wonder if the indicated 44,319 miles is true, or if it’s been around once. I think this would be a great cruiser—what do you think?

My grandfather’s first car was a ’64 green Catalina four door hardtop, It’s a beautiful car.

It actually looks like a decent buy for a running car…they are not hi-priced and it looks like a lot of “cruiser” for limited investment..

I owned a ’67 Bonneville wagon, with a vinyl clad roof, and the 400 cu engine. It never passed a gas station it didn’t like, but it was very fast off the line, so fast that the brace that holds up the back of the transmission got metal fatigue at about 75,000 miles and when I tromped on it, it just broke off at the side rail. Got it welded back together and eventually replaced. The heater and AC controls operate (or don’t) on a vacuum connection, water pumps lasted about 30,000 miles, and when the starter was hot it would not turn – so if you had driven a while and the engine was hot, you didn’t turn it off unless you were going to be stopped for 15 minutes or more. Otherwise it was a great car.

@Charlie, Did you have headers? You may have needed to install a heat shield around the starter. The stock exhaust is far enough away that heat is never an issue with the starter.

No aftermarket stuff on it, as far as I know, bought it used from a dealer whose wife drove it full of kids all the time. It was also very close to the ground, 14″ wheels, put 15″ wheels on it and bigger tires to raise it up a little, off a Chevy wagon at the junkyard. Changing the whole suspension was too expensive, labor wise. But it RAN. If you look at old pictures of auto tours, you will see ’40’s Buicks with hoods up at stops to cool the starter enough that it would turn the engine over on a restart.

I had a 67 Catalina and a 68 Grand Prix – in Australia – both 400 cars – smooth and the Cat went like a bullet ( regular fuel 2 bbl low comp car) – great cars – can’t say there would be too many ragtops left – L
