Behind The Barn: 1970 Camaro Z/28

1970 Camaro Z28 RS

We’ve seen more than a few finds that just never quite made it into the barn. In the case of this Z/28 Camaro, it made it right up to the back of the barn and that’s where it stayed. It’s looking pretty rough on the outside, but the engine looks decent and the interior would clean up. It’s going to need lots of rust repair, as is the case with most cars left behind the barn. The floors and trunk are just about gone and it really should have those areas repaired to be safe. Wouldn’t it be fun to leave it looking rough on the outside, but nice underneath and inside. It would be a great sleeper that would throw other drivers for a loop! If you’d like to take this Camaro on, you can find it here on eBay in East Aurora, New York with a current bid of $13,600. So what would you do with this Z/28?

    LT1 automatic?
    Either change to a stick
Or change to an 8.1 auto.

    I know keep it original.

Trans Am and formulas look good stock.
Camaros look better with giant tires and creativity.
Has an original 1973 or 74 camaro ever out run a Trans Am SD.

’70 Z/28 auto is very rare. I only new of 1 before this one, and it was made for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. when I was a test driver in late ’69-’70. It was special order. They had high performance test cars, but all were auto. So when the end of year trade started, it was held up due to the auto request. They were trading a ’69 Camaro SS396 auto in. Later(’74) when I worked at a trans shop, it came in for a rebuild. I told the boss that I new this car. He was amazed it had an auto, because everyone new Z/28’s weren’t available with auto. It was a T-400 like in this car.

The RS package added to the Z/28 package allowed for the auto trans, a Z/28 package only took the auto trans off the option sheet.

70.5 was the best Z-28 of them all with the monster LT-1, low back buckets the short rear spoiler, 12 Bolt rear, etc shame what people do with their cars. this one should have never been allowed to fall into such a state!

It’s a parts car IMHO. Frankly, anyone would be in a much better position if they purchased steel instead of rust and steel parts. Always start with a steel frame and steel body. Never purchase rust, and always tell sellers that you are interested in steel and not rust. Tell them that you can buy all the rust you want for less than $1.00 per pound.

#1 Rule of Restoration: NEVER purchase RUST.

Would be a cool project if not so rusted. Would be cool as it is for say $800 without the engine. Just not worth putting it back together stock with AT…..I guess if all us band together and stop paying stupid prices for rusted out parts cars, the price might actually drop to where they belong….A rusty old car should NOT cost more than a perfectly good 3-4 year old car that has cold A/C and runs perfectly……

Cost to repair would exceed value of car.

I think a lot of 70 1/2 Z/28s had automatic trannys, nothing rare about that, but they all are getting harder to find and collectible, check out http://www.nastyZ28.com
