Better Option: 1963 Austin-Healey Sprite

1963-austin-healey-sprite-project

Before you run out and buy the Sprite from earlier, may we suggest this 1963 example. This car is better for many reasons. It is a Mark II so that means no quarter windows and unfortunately, less power. That might not be an issue though because the seller mentions a 1275. This Sprite also includes a title and is claimed to be rust-free. Obviously it still needs a lot of work, but few cars are easier to restore. Find it here on craigslist in Fort Collins, Colorado where the seller is asking $1,100.

    Unrusty, seems complete, good title, 1275 engine, $1,100 or *offer*.
    WAY better all around than the earlier Sprite from today.

    And the buyer gets the bonus of getting to deal with a reasonable seller who knows something about what he’s selling and its value.

    Best of both worlds on this one. You get the better looking MkII chassis, a 1275, what looks like a solid chassis, all the chrome/trim bits and more. This one is a win all round!

    You can make a great sixties era racing special out of one of these on the cheap. Just add a nose like this one and some lexan fold down windscreens;

    I would build a mini racer like this with a hopped up Japanese motor in it if I wasn’t 6’6″ tall…

      Looks like a good plan to me Robert! I have a tall friend who is into Spridgets and the way he got around the size problem was to install some Porsche Speedster replica seats. They look great and make the cabin feel much more spacious. I’m 6’2 and after squeezing through the door, I actually felt quite comfortable and that was with a hardtop in place. I too had given up on small cars after owning a Spitfire for a few months, but he has renewed my hope that I might fit again! I have also seen people fit seats from an Elan. They look really good too, but I’m not sure how much more space they give you. It might be worth looking into though.

    You know that this has not been driven in at least 25 or more years. It has a SAFETY inspection sticker on the windshield instead of a pollution certificate.

    If the title is in anyway screwed up, names do not match etc, and from the same era, a duplicate title will be a real joy to obtain. Live in Denver, been there…

      You outta go take a look Chris! It is just up in Fort Collins and the seller claims that they have a “GOOD Colorado title”. If we were in Denver we would already be on I-25 headed North.

    Isn’t that a rare Subaru SVX sitting next to the AH?
    Those peculiar side windows…

    It does look pretty solid and the price is more than reasonable. Stir in the 1275, add front disc brakes from a later Midget, a Datsun 210 transmission (which are more rare than the Midget is nowadays) for five speeds, and a dash of 3:91 rear end (instead of the 4:22 this car prolly has) and it’s a great driver. My ’72 has the Datsun box and it makes the car really usable…

    i would autocross this one and use the green one for parts, keeping what fit the red car and selling the parts that did not fit. had a lot of these and worked on a lot more, back in the day. great find
