For many enthusiasts, the MG T-Series represents the golden age of the traditional British roadster. By 1954, however, the design was nearing the end of its run. To keep sales alive before the all-new MGA arrived, MG introduced one final version of the T-Series, the TF 1500. With its 1466cc engine producing 63 horsepower and distinctive “1500” badging, it was the most advanced, rarest, and arguably the most desirable of the line. Only about 3,400 were built, and today, good examples are highly sought after by collectors who want that last, best expression of the classic MG formula.

This 1955 MG TF 1500, available now on Barn Finds and located in Antioch, Illinois, checks all the right boxes. Finished in elegant birch gray with a red interior, it wears one of the factory-correct combinations that flatters the TF’s graceful curves. The paint shows minor chips and scratches here and there, but the body remains straight and free of rust or accident damage. Chrome trim presents well with only light patina — just enough to show its age without spoiling the shine.

Inside, the red upholstery gives the cabin a rich look. The passenger-side seat bottom was recently replaced, while the driver’s seat remains intact and rip-free. The passenger seatback does have a small split, but overall, the interior feels ready to enjoy. A full set of side curtains is included, all in good condition, along with a clean convertible top. The top shows no tears or stains, and a slightly sagging strap will be corrected by the seller before handover.

Mechanically, this TF is in excellent shape. Just last year, the numbers-matching engine was gone through with new bearings, tappets, gaskets, and seals, along with a professionally inspected camshaft. A new clutch and release bearing were installed at the same time, making this car a reliable driver. Sensible upgrades like a modern oil filter mount and PerTronix electronic ignition add peace of mind without compromising originality.

Additional recent work includes four new tires, a rebuilt front end with polyurethane bushings and a hardened sway bar, fully serviced brakes with new cylinders and hoses, and a new old stock gas tank. Even the horns have been upgraded to louder accessory units, though the originals can easily be refitted. The lighting system has also been modernized with Hella H4 headlights for better night driving.

With receipts dating back to 1978, this TF has the kind of history and maintenance that buyers dream about. It remains numbers-matching, sorted, and ready for a new chapter with its next caretaker. As the last and best of the MG T-Series, the TF 1500 has always held a special place in the collector market.

Would you keep this classic British roadster just as it sits, or continue refining it to concours-level perfection?

Nice car to drive; is very controllable when it’s drifting or a bit sideways

Buy it and drive it. Show cars are just no fun. compared to hitting the road.

I’ve said it before, I’m a pretty lucky guy. Between growing up in one of the most exciting times in automotive history, being a major gearhead, and running a collectible auto dealership in the 80’s, I’ve had, at one time or another, one each of most everything. There are still a couple of cars I’ve never owned but always wanted, and along with a +4 Morgan the TF is on that short list. They look like what a proper British sports car is supposed to look like. Rickety, underpowered and somehow composed all at the same time. Yes, TF’s are iconic. And this one appears to be a well-kept example. Nothing odd or out of the ordinary, nice colors and no apologies. He should do well.

Now you didn’t have to go and say something silly like the “most desirable of the T series. The body style was way too long in the tooth by then and the molded in headlights remind me of the reptilian like headlights on pre-war Pierce Arrows. They’re a nice car but not the “most desirable.”

Of all the T-series cars, the TF was my favorite. Contrary to some opinions, I LIKE the molded-in headlight buckets. I sure wouldn’t kick this off my driveway although I prefer the wire wheel option to the discs.

This car would be a lot of fun, everything except the “Lucas, Prince of Darkness” electrics. I had an MGB and it had its share of Lucas problems. But understanding the British ways of wiring and you did okay.

But I still cannot figure out exactly what they mean with “Light, Dark, or Medium” colors. Or how about the three-position switch: “Smoke, Smolder, and Ignite.”

Is the fuel gauge operative, it’s sending unit looks defunct. Is there a proper rear main seal in this engine or does it just use a slinger? (and a dripper)

Hi Peter, there is no fuel gauge in any of the MG T-Series models just a low fuel light. The light does work but has not been hooked up to the sender unit. With this you must use a small stick to tell how much gas you have in the tank.

The engine does have the proper rear main seal in the car.

The T series has no fuel gauge. Open the fuel door and look in. They make a measuring stick you can purchase from Moss Motors

I think this is the best looking car of the T series cars and I like the steel wheels with hubcaps better than wires. It looks like a good driver and that is what these cars should be. You can only look at a garage pet for so long and the market for these cars are people like me (in their 70’s) who grew up fixing and driving them. The younger crowd have no interest in these and you can’t take them on the crowded highways or else you will be run off the road!
