It certainly wasn’t their primary intention, but General Motors has done the automotive hobby a solid favor by continuing to manufacture excellent overhead-valve V8 engines and automatic transmissions with a similar footprint to the powertrains they’ve built since Ed Cole had a say in manufacturing. Hobbyists can upgrade not only their General Motors classics with modern fuel-injected V8s, but many have also used them in (cough, sorry Ford fans) Fox Body Mustangs and any number of non-GM vehicles. While this beautiful ’62 C10 doesn’t have the newest GM V8 under the hood, it does have the powerful LT1 most commonly found in ’90s Corvettes and Camaros. In addition to other driver-friendly upgrades, this is a truck you can buy now and enjoy as soon as you pick it up, and it’s being offered as a Barn FindsĀ Auction in Haven, Kansas.
The LT1 was introduced as the Corvette’s standard powerplant in 1992, and in addition to improving the breathing, Chevrolet’s engineers reversed the coolant flow, routing it through the cylinder heads first, where it was needed most. Another upside, according to a Road & TrackĀ road test of the then-new Corvette, was that the warmer coolant increased the cylinder bore temperature, resulting in “reduced ring bore friction.” This and other improvements resulted in 300 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque, enough to push a Corvette from zero-to-sixty in 5.7 seconds. That’s plenty of power to propel this somewhat heavier truck down the road with alacrity and efficiency (the LT1 could achieve fuel economy in the mid-20s at expressway speeds). The rear axle in this C10 has been replaced with a 12-bolt from an ’82 Chevy; its 3.73:1 gears are a good combination with the truck’s 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission.
The interior has been modernized with a full set of Dolphin gauges and an aftermarket “Vintage Air” air conditioning system. With the air conditioner keeping the cabin cool and the overdrive keeping the revs down to 2500 or so on the highway, you could drive this restomodded truck all day.
The paint job is a beautiful deep red with a black top, and the refinished bed is so nice that you’ll be reluctant to put anything in the back. It’s probably best to treat it like the trunk of your nicest car.
Finishing out the look is a pair of drop spindles (with a front disc brake conversion) and 18-inch Detroit Steel Wheels (made in Michigan, by the way), all of which add up to a stance that would be almost impossible to improve upon. Aside from the spindles, the suspension is basically stock, including Chevy’s torsion-bar front and long-arm, coil-sprung rear suspension. It’s a clean update on an original 283/Powerglide truck that has lived its whole life in its home county in Kansas. If you’d like to hit the road this summer in a practical classic pickup, bid now!

Luv those trucks from the mid sixties… The engine looks like it will cruise down the highway with no problem.
My dad had a maroon 1965 Chevy truck with a 283 similar to this one.
GLWS!
Nice clean build and just enough modifications to make it fit anywhere on our roads. I like it.
Today’s “small” trucks are bigger than this. A Toyota Tacoma is bigger than the ’60 Chev Apache I used to have.
Just about all vehicles are bigger. I remember when my father had a 65 Cadillac Fleetwood. That thing back then was GIGANTIC! Now you see these old “boats” at car shows and they seem so small compared to a modern cruiser of today.
This looks WAY too nice to use it for the purpose it was designed for. Super nice job of the remod, but I’d have to pass just for its too-nice-looks.
This is the first I have seen one with the wrap around windshield and the large rear window.
I owned a ’65 with flat windshield and small rear glass. Had a friend with a ’65 that had the flat windshield and large rear glass. MY BIL had a ’62 with the wrap around windshield and small rear glass.
The large rear window was a feature of the Custom Cab in those years. They continued it until the major update in ’67.
I live in Wichita and 40 miles from Haven, then another 17 miles to Hutchinson Ks, home of Carey Salt and other salt producers.
Beautiful truck but I would have to see the underside because of all the salt used in this area when we get snow/ice.
Good luck to the buyer.
Wow a Panoramic custom cab with the chrome grille/bumpers! I prefer them stock but this is one nice build and not over the top. Bids will easily approach $40k, if not more. GLWTA!
Great looking ole Knee Knocker truck. I typically prefer the 64-66 models of this truck because of the wrap around windshield and infringement on the cab / doors but this is pretty great. Nice older engine that will get the job done and an automatic. Only thing I would change would be to paint the hood hinges black and maybe the underside of the hood black. Hinges for sure but that is nit-picking. Secondly I don’t like the idea of the gas tank port for filling in the middle of the bed if that is what that is. I was at Pate in April and saw a conversion of moving the gas tank from behind the seat to underneath the bed and they also moved the filler spout to the back and put in the original gas sport with cap on the outside of the bed. Really clean looking. That said, this is a great looking truck and now I know where to get some really cool wheels for my 62 and 66. GLWTA. I might have to bid and snap this thing up. It is ready to go and I am years away from this on my mods.
