BF Auction: 1970 Pontiac GTO

Bid to: $0View Result

It would be easy to take one look at this 1970 Pontiac GTO and dismiss it immediately. That could be a mistake, because it offers a surprising amount to potential buyers. It will require work if it is to ever return to its rightful place on our road, but there are other possibilities to consider. The current owner wants it to head to a new home where someone can make the most of its positive attributes. Therefore, she has listed the GTO exclusively with us at Barn Finds Auctions.

Pontiac’s Second Generation GTO range graced showroom floors from 1968 until 1972. The company’s latest offering featured a more sculpted styling, a move that gave the GTO a greater sense of presence. Our feature car rolled off the line in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1970. Its first owner ordered it in Pepper Green, which remains visible in a few spots that haven’t been repainted in Blue. This is a case of “what you see is what you get.” Essentially, it is a bodyshell with a few minor mechanical and interior pieces, and the only glass present is the windshield. There are wide expanses of surface corrosion, which might lead some to dismiss the car immediately. However, the owner made the wise decision to raise the car onto blocks when it was parked, meaning that the underside hasn’t spent years in contact with Planet Earth. There appear to be a couple of small spots of penetrating rust, but the overall impression is that media blasting won’t reveal many nasty secrets. Therefore, as the basis for a project build or to revive another GTO that has been damaged beyond repair in a fender bender, this body could form an ideal starting point.

Interior components included in the sale are limited to items like the steering column, shifter, and heater. It is a similar story with the mechanical components, with the buyer receiving a brake booster, some hoses, and limited wiring. However, that makes this a blank canvas for the winning bidder to create the GTO of their dreams. Following a faithful approach is possible, but there is no reason why it couldn’t form the basis for a “Judge” tribute. Alternatively, enthusiasts with a GTO that they previously deemed to be beyond salvation could use this body for a wonderful revival, returning a desirable classic to active service to provide years of motoring pleasure.

It is fair to say that the muscle car market that developed during the 1960s was reaching its end by 1970, although manufacturers continued to produce potent classics, such as the Pontiac GTO. However, the sales figures told the story of the sector’s demise, with 40,149 buyers ordering a GTO in 1970, compared to a tally of 87,684 vehicles only two years earlier. We are unlikely to see another genuine muscle car era as companies focus on electrification. Therefore, returning vehicles like this GTO to active service has become more critical as enthusiasts strive to preserve an important slice of automotive history. Using this body as the basis for a project build or to revive another GTO that is damaged beyond repair are both viable options, which is why it deserves a closer look.

Frameless version. On the plus side, it’s a floor shift car with factory A/C.

I believe the term here is “plucked cleaner than a chicken”… This was likely a doner car and this is what’s left after everything else was sold off. If you need a shell then it might be a decent starting point. No mention of a title so I’m assuming that’s also not included. If you have a complete car with a totally rusted shell then this could be a good find.

Or someone could use the GTO VIN to put on a LeMans

Steve R: Federally Illegal to remove/switch tags; besides body has partial vin stamped in several places. If this is done, one is cheating the next owner; and if next owner discovers & sues; Federal prison for 5 years. I know a guy who did this with a Corvette & had to do the time, wrecked his whole life, lost his business, missed kids growing up, wife moved on..

Can’t really say it’s a parts car because of the absence of parts.

Good car part. Not to be confused with parts car.

You’d have to rebuild this thing around a partial shadow because that’s about all there is.
But, if you have the skill and the bank it’s certainly doable.

I do believe the car factories have realized the public does not want electric cars due to many factors, safety being one and fire hazard being another.
That being said it seems to this writer that the car folks have given the public some extra horsepower cars in the last several years.
Now if they only will go back to more RWD cars we can be happy again.

I think they put it up on blocks to get the last of the usable parts off it.

I don’t see anything worth having at any price. I just had a piano hauled away for $245.00 that was out of tune, and hadn’t really been played for about 30 years. It was deemed worthless by the appraiser – yet nothing was missing, and he said the cabinet looked really good.

This GTO looks 100 times worse, and should be a pay to haul away.

what are you supposed to do with this? yard art maybe? it should be free. yeah, it got the vin plate, and you could do dirty birdy and put that on lemans but that could mean trouble. I have plates and papers from a 70 gs 455 in my name that was scrapped 45yrs ago and can’t do a thing with them. should have just left that car sit.

Back in 1970 I went to a movie theater and when I came out that’s all that was left, the bad part was I paid cash for a new car but didn’t know I needed full coverage insurance. Had it taken to the back 40 and now it’s been found .

I don’t see any of those “positive attributes” This carcass has been stripped to the point that it will cost more to accrue the parts than it could ever be worth, not to mention the labor.
I restore cars as a hobby and generally believe that any car is worth restoring, but not this one. It’s not worth whatever it goes for. Sorry
Wait! There’s a reserve on this? LOL!

My buddy could have used that in 1979 when he rolled his red 70 GTO on its roof. Looks like this one has been sitting that long. I still have his air cleaner in service on my 1985 K30 Silverado.

There are a few hard to find parts left but one is not the tub. The pans are probably gone anyway. Put a chicken inside and find out, the chicken will probably fall through.

This poor ๐Ÿ hasnโ€™t been fed in so long itโ€™s down to just a few bones.
I think life support left when all the parts disappeared.
I have a set of original tail lights and a rear seat to a 68 goat.. Hmmm does this also mean that I also have a GTO without a title for future sale? Oh right just need a trim tag ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜‚

The current bid for this 1970 GTO shell is $50? In 1970 a decent used car could be had for $50 and it would usually give at least a couple of years of reliable service.

Even if they gave it away, it’s not worth 1/10 of the buyers premium.
      $500 is ridiculous

Back in the 70โ€™s, I saw a GTO one morning that apparently got impaled on the end of a center median barrier the previous night on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn NY. That evening, when going in the reverse direction, it looked to me almost as bad as this shell. A week later when I drove by again, it looked much closer to this one. Stripped cars, wrecks, used up parts cars and possibly stolen cars should be sent to the crusher. Transferring a Vehicle ID tag to another car? Try a check of local grand theft auto conviction cross bar hotel stretches. Put this thing to rest.
