This 1972 Mercury Cougar convertible, now live on Barn Finds, is one of the rarest Cougars ever produced. According to the included Marti Report, it is one of only 17 built in this exact configuration, making it a highly collectible example of Mercury’s stylish pony car. Currently located in Henderson, Nevada, this survivor shows 77,488 miles (true mileage unknown) and comes with a clean California title.

Discovered as a true barn find, this convertible has been off the road since around 2006, with its last startup in 2019. While it’s currently a non-runner, the 351 Cleveland V8 still turns freely and has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake and Holley 4-barrel carburetor. Power is delivered through the FMX 3-speed automatic transmission, with factory equipment including power steering and manual drum brakes.

The Cougar’s body shows remarkably well for being over 50 years old. The torque boxes, rockers, quarter panels, and trunk floor are all solid, with only two areas in the floor pan and the lip around the trunk opening requiring attention. This structural integrity makes it an excellent restoration candidate compared to many cars of the era that have succumbed to rust.

Inside, the car retains most of its original components. While a full interior restoration will be needed, nearly everything is present and intact, making the job straightforward. Missing pieces, such as the carpet, windshield, and convertible top, are all readily available through Cougar parts suppliers, ensuring this rare car can be brought back to factory-correct condition without extensive searching.

Finished originally in white with a black convertible top and glass rear window, this Cougar has since been repainted. A number of new parts are included with the sale, adding further value for the next caretaker.

Collectors and enthusiasts alike will appreciate the rarity of this car. With just 17 built in this specification, documented by the Marti Report, it stands as a seldom-seen opportunity to restore and preserve an important piece of Mercury history. Whether kept original or given a thoughtful restomod treatment, this convertible has all the bones to become a standout at shows and cruise nights. Would you return this Cougar to its original white-and-black factory glory, or would you give it a modern twist as a restomod?
