UPDATE – The seller has added videos of this Power Wagon, which can viewed below.
UPDATE – The seller finally had an opportunity to take pictures of the truck on a nice clear day. The color and paint look awesome with the sun shining on them! So, be sure to check out the last six photos of the gallery below.
What’s your first impression of this 1973 Dodge Power Wagon? To me, it would be right at home on a Hollywood set as the hero vehicle for some rugged ’70s action star, perhaps a private-eye type with a Lee Majors look. Even the name of this big Dodge evokes heroism on the stage and screen: Power Wagon! With its factory coat of Bright Red paint and a two-owner history, it’s about as close to being in the 1970s as you’re going to get these days. Located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, this ruggedly handsome truck is being offered as a Barn Finds Auction, so if you’re looking to attract attention, and you will, bid now!
One thing is clear about this truck: It’s been a recipient of fastidious maintenance. It has the biggest factory Mopar small block, the 360. Rated at 180 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, the 360 channels that power through a Torqueflite automatic and an NP205 transfer case, and both work smoothly. The seller has included a litany of new and rebuilt mechanical bits, and it will be clearer by far to list them.
- Rebuilt cylinder heads and pushrods
- New alternator and starter
- New radiator, belts, and hoses
- New wiring and ignition tuneup
- New fuel tank, fuel pump, and NOS Holley carburetor
- New exhaust and mufflers
- New steering link, tie rods, brake lines, and front wheel bearings
The new goodies aren’t limited to the greasy parts, either. New upholstery and carpet spiff up the interior, and new weatherstripping keeps the rain and snow where it belongs. This W100 has the “Adventurer” trim inside and out, which offers more bright trim outside and a little fancier trim inside. Everything in here is in excellent condition, including the dash pad and door panels. It was originally an air conditioned truck, but the AC equipment has been removed. Aside from an intermittent fuel gauge and dash lights, all equipment operates as it should.
The seller does not want to mislead potential buyers into thinking that this truck is perfect; it is 52 years old, after all. He says it wears “honest patina” and “should be left alone,” in his opinion. For example, the bed shows wear from decades of hard work, as you’d expect from a truck (even if it just happens to look like a hero from the small screen).
Best of all is a nearly complete lack of rust, always an unexpected treat on any machine from the ’70s. Perhaps the bright red paint reminds me of those episodes of Emergency! that I occasionally watch on MeTV, but I can’t get over the idea of this Power Wagon as a star. If you also love the ’70s, you’ll look long and hard to find a truck this stylish. If you agree, then place your bid, and hopefully, you can take this beautiful rig home to your Hollywood set!

back years back no one thought twice about tossing airconditioning in a car or truck.
This was the second year after Dodge completely redesigned their trucks. They looked much better, and would continue on this platform until 1994. This is a nice example, and the engine isn’t smogged out. If I was in the market for a small 4×4 pickup I’d be bidding on it.
This looks to have a ballast resistor (by driver’s hood hinge). It is always a good idea to carry a spare. My Dodge W-200 crewcab of similar vintage left me stranded twice when this part failed.
Best thing would be to a “Chevy design” aftermarket HEI distributor in it.
There have been GM HEI distributors available for every popular V8 for years, they are even inexpensive, often less than $100 including coil. The problem is they are cheep Chinese imports, I worked at a place that sold them and they ran about a 25% warranty rate.

Sharp looking rig! Not many of these left. I’ve not seen the 94-96 Ford forged Alcoa wheels on a Dodge like this before, but like every other vehicle they’ve been added to, they really dress it up!
Yowza! Thats a Beauty ;-) Love that its original paint, and oh ya- Red ;-)
Just a note: The bed is nice and straight no dents under the rubber bed mat, the mat just curled up in a couple spots with our recent cold snap, so just know its nice under there ;-) This truck looks even better in person, especially on a sunny day the color and finish pops and it sounds beautiful with the new dual exhaust and mufflers.
PWs had awful low gearing, at least the old post war ones did. What did these have? Is this meant for the highway or the farm? Hard to do both those things right at the same time.` Maybe by this time PW was more badging then work truck.
if your concern is granny gearing, this truck goes down the road without issue or high rpm, i have had several of these over the years and this one is geared for more driveability and less say for crawling, climbing etc although capable of that. Of course if you wanted a true highway cruiser then switching out these swamper tires to a more friendly street tire would certainly help, but we love the look she has now. Its really all in what one desires.
I don’t know, not really enough pictures, LOL. Cool truck, good luck with the sale. Wish I was in the market for one.
Thanks Ed ;-) Yes I really wanted to show off how truly incredible the condition is of this beautiful truck hence all the pics. Hopefully the sun comes out for us this weekend we will try to get some pics with the sun on her. The thumbs ups, and honks are really fun from folks when they get sight of this Power Wagon.
I would like to know how many miles is on this ride? I would also like to know why the cylinder heads were rebuilt with pushrods.
Hello George, only has 113,000 original miles. She sat for years in a barn, gas went bad per normal…it was drained but old gas tank had debris in it that caused bent pushrods because the poor quality fuel can lead to stuck valves, which in turn puts excessive stress on the pushrods, causing them to bend when the engine tries to operate with the valve not fully opening or closing properly, thats why we did everything we did to bring this old gal back up to exellent running state. She purrs like a big cat now. Thanks
Thanks for providing the update.
Paint it yellow with the Rod Hall Stripes and have a Cool Baja clone !
That is a nice looker and could be a hard worker In a way I would like that one better than a new one if the price is riight
Any reason the a/f was removed? And any other issues besides dash light and fuel Guage being intermittent?
Hello Paddy, in our neck of the woods a/c is not something that is ever needed and was not a priority when we brought the truck back to its beautiful condition. However, a new compressor evap, necessary lines are all readily available if it’s something the future owner desires. The cab light will need a new light bulb and the horn does not work. I haven’t even looked into that as they are usually an easy fix.
I like the videos, couple questions: With the swamper tires that are on it now, does it drive on hard surfaces with a bumpy loud roll down the road or? Also, you did show a lot of pictures, but i noticed on the last video at the very end the paint looks much brighter. Sometimes pictures can make paint look better, and or worse, how would you rate the paint and color in the pics vs. in real life?
Hello Van, surprisingly the tires that are on it now which are excellent condition fyi go down the road (pavement) with pretty much normal feel and dont make any hum typical with swamper type tires, thats why we didnt switch these out with a more tamed highway cruiser type tire. These tires in my opinion just give a look to this truck which exepmlifies the macho power wagon cool factor that I love about these rigs. The paint is excellent considering 52 years old love the dodge paint! Any yes the color definitely in person is fantastic. Overall in person this truck looks much better and garners astonishment from those that happen to see it parked downtown when Ive ventured out with it and folks ask me if its original and the resounding “Yes” from me and look of shock is received. Its a real rare gem.
Hey Luther If I flew into Spokane would I be able to drive it as is to Portland,Oregon and expect no problems along the way??
Id say you would be fine, we have mainly used it around town and with the work done to it its been great on the road. BTW we took some pics today as we finally got a nice clear day so just waiting for those to get uploaded onto the site so everyone can see how brilliant this color and paint is in the sun.
last 6 pics just uploaded, thanks guys! Just to show how this riggin’ really pops in the sunshine.
Probably already covered somewhere but it is a shortbed correct? Also has it ever had a new timing chain and gear set replacement? thanks
Yes Van it is indeed a shortbed. And yes it has recently installed CLOYES 9-3603X9 Timing Chain and Gear Set.
