Aside from a Volkswagen Beetle, is there an automotive shape more instantly recognizable than a Jeep CJ-5? From its seven-slot grille to its squared off tail, the CJ-5 plied American roads and trails for nearly 30 production years. Even today, you can walk down to a Mahindra dealer and pick up a Roxor that looks awfully familiar, but why bother when you can have the real thing? This 1974 CJ has been treated to a new aftermarket fiberglass body along with a long list of other goodies, so it’s ready to hit your favorite ORV trail. Located in Ostrander, Minnesota, it’s being offered as a Barn Finds Auction.
For those who aren’t familiar with Jeep CJs, they have long been popular enough (once again, CJ-5 production ran from 1955 to 1983) to warrant aftermarket “tubs” so that a rusty Jeep body could be replaced rather than repaired. Since CJ-5s have now been out of production longer than they were in it, fiberglass parts aren’t as prolific as they once were, but looking underneath our auction Jeep, it’s easy to see why people took the plunge. If you have a solid frame and a ventilated body, a few friends and a weekend or two of work could get you back on the road, as long as you remember that a little extra thought had to be given to electrical grounding. This Jeep has a new exhaust system for its classic 258 inline six, which produced 110 horsepower for 1974. It also has new springs to ensure that the ride height is where it needs to be for off-roading, new shocks to ensure that the wheels are always in contact with the terra firma, and a new gas tank and tires to give you a little extra peace of mind that you’ll make it back from parts unknown.
The interior is all business, with new seats on an uncarpeted floor. The transmission is the standard Warner three-speed, which should be a T-14A if my materials are correct. Although the CJ comes with a new soft top, its aftermarket underdash heater and side curtains make this a three-season vehicle for all but the hardiest of souls.
And maybe that hardy soul is you! Today’s Wranglers are certainly capable off-road, but they’re a few degrees removed from the rugged Jeeps of yesteryear. If you’ve been looking for an elemental off-roader that’s less expensive than a new Roxor, bid now on Barn Finds Auctions.
I loved your comment about grounding concerns. “Hey Clem, I hooked up all the red wires, but nuthin’s working…”
my grandpa would kill for that :(
well start bidding then :)-
someone way closer than me is going to score a nice ride
