Carl Heald worked for a company with a somewhat similar name to his, Heath, an electronics company that made kits for building your own radios and similar things. The Heath company wanted to enter the recreational vehicle market and asked Mr. Heald to design a motorized bike, the Heath Kit Hilltopper. This 1986 Heald Super Tryke STX-360 is a later variation of that model and is listed here on Barn Finds!

A lot of us remember Heath Kits, even if we never had one. Their ads were everywhere in the ’60s and ’70s. Sometime after Mr. Heald came up with a couple of models for Heath, the electronics company decided to stick with its core business and sold the motorsports end to Mr. Heald, reportedly for one dollar. The Heald Hauler series of recreational motorcycles, trikes, and four-wheeled vehicles was sold in kit form.

This is one of the company’s three-wheelers, and they refer to them as Super Trykes. There were several models, and a “Heald Hauler” version had a little bed on the back. This one has bins built into a rear rack, and the seller actually has four of this model for sale. You can see that some of the photos look like different models, and they are.

I believe this one is an STX-360. The STX model had an enclosed transaxle rather than an open one, which protected it from dirt, sand, and water. The 360 portion is related to the 357-cc engine. There was an STX-320 with a 318-cc engine, and a couple of SST models without the enclosed transaxle. The company also made two-wheeled mini bikes with the same big wheels. Heck, why not collect one of each?!

The engine should be a 357-cc four-stroke Tecumseh single with 10 horsepower, electric start, and reverse. The seller has four of these and claims they run, but could use batteries. We had a used Heathkit minibike and had it for most of the1970s and early 80s. My kids loved it, rode it everywhere. Fat tires, pull start B and S engine, auto trans. Never failed to start, go, or stop. Great fun!
