When the new 1972 Dodge trucks were introduced, nobody at Chrysler Corporate likely foresaw that the same basic platform would be in service for over 20 years and would be used for everything from farm duty to emergency services. This 1991 model is a desirable shortbed 4×4 with a 318 under the hood and 141,000 miles on the clock. After serving faithfully as the fire chief’s truck in Mead, Washington, it is now located in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and is being offered as a Barn Finds Auction. So, whether you’re a fan of classic fire trucks or the TV show Emergency! this Dodge might just be the truck for you!

It isn’t just the basic platform that makes this 1991 Ram a throwback; the driveline, too, is fundamentally straight out of the ’70s, and that’s not a bad thing. This Ram has the anvil-tough 318 under the hood, in its last year in “LA” configuration before the 5.2 Magnum was released; it made 170 fuel-injected horsepower for 1991. This one is fitted with air conditioning, a luxury that the guys on Emergency! were unlikely to enjoy (Who knows? Some of the squad cars on Adam-12 had air, so anything’s possible). The seller notes that it isn’t blowing cold, so it will need to be serviced.

The rest of the driveline is straightforward, with an automatic transmission and a two-speed transfer case (it should be an NP-208). You’d never guess that the interior has seen 141,000 miles; it’s in excellent condition and is a fine example of how trucks used to be configured: a simple cloth-covered bench and few frills. It also appears to have a CB radio, another ’70s throwback that should provide hours of fun. Start thinking of your handle now.

The undercarriage of this truck looks about as clean as a 34-year-old truck can look. The W150 four-by-fours had leaf springs all-around; if it works, why change it?

Of course, this Dodge is a bit too nice to do any serious off-roading without feeling a little bad about it; maybe you’d be better off turning heads around town. There’s something in us all that is drawn to a big red truck, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as nice and rust-free as this ’91 Ram. The seller has included plenty of pictures and a couple of driving videos in the gallery below, so if you are a fan of ’70s television action dramas or if you simply like big red trucks, make a bid on Barn Finds Auctions!

The first time I saw one I thought it was the ugliest grille but now I appreciate the transition to the new BR series. The Magnum FI would be better but the TBI was a good performer. There’s a lot of good miles left in this one.

this truck is fun to drive, starts/runs and handles very well plus we get thumb ups and big smiles wherever we take it. Has good power and does great on the highway. Winter is coming! This truck is ready to tackle it. This is really a great original find.

Does the Boy George tape come with it? I’ve got an 88 D-100 2 wheel drive with 54,000 miles. Fun truck to drive. It’s got the 318 in it with the throttle body. I’d get in that truck and drive to California from Illinois. Good old trucks.
