We find ourselves in a bit of a pickle! After purchasing and thoroughly enjoying a Porsche Boxster, we decided to buy a water-cooled Porsche 911. Well, we found a fantastic low-mileage example, but a new project car is on its way to the Barn Finds Garage, and we will need as much garage space as possible. As much as we enjoy driving this 911, we’ve decided we better part ways with it and a few of our other drivers to make room. With just 48k miles on the odometer, this well-cared-for 911 is ready to enjoy, so if you’ve been thinking about getting into the Porsche world, this might be the car for you!
We weren’t sure about the water-cooled 911 when they first came out. It’s a significant departure from the air-cooled 911, which was in production for over 30 years. The first water-cooled 911s rolled out of the factory in 1999 and while they lost some of their quirks and charm, they were improved in a number of ways that make them better daily drivers. That isn’t to say they aren’t still charming and incredibly fun to drive, they are just a different experience. With 315 horsepower, performance from the 3.6-liter engine is impressive, and the climate control system is vastly improved, making them great all-season drivers.
When we first looked at this 911, we were impressed with its cosmetics. The exterior looks great, with only a few minor scratches and dings, and the interior is fantastic. It’s in excellent condition, but the color is really special. Most 911s from this era have black or grey interiors, but this one came from the factory with Metropol Blue leather upholstery. Even the dash and door panels are dark blue. It’s hard to capture in photos. It sometimes looks black and other times bright blue, but it’s a very dark blue. The previous owner had been looking for a 911 to replace her Mercedes-Benz with a blue interior, and when she found this one and saw that the interior was blue, she had to have it. She took great care of it, and so did the original owner. It’s a great color combination; we haven’t seen many others like it.
Mechanically, this car is ready to go. Shortly after the previous owner purchased it, she had the IMS bearing replaced with one from LN Engineering. There are receipts for the work, as well other service that was performed and the Continental tires. There’s a slight oil weep that’s noted in an old inspection from when the seller purchased it 10 years ago, but we haven’t seen any drips on the floor from it. During our ownership, we’ve had the oil changed, and that’s all it has needed. It fires right up and runs great. The exhaust note is excellent, and the acceleration is very impressive. We wouldn’t hesitate to jump in this Porsche and go on a long journey.
We will be sad to see this one go. It’s a fun driver, and you don’t find examples that are this clean very often, but we need the garage space and don’t want to see such a beautiful car sit outside. So, if you’d love to have this 911, cast your high bids below. And if you have any questions for us, leave them in the comments, and we will do our best to get you an answer!

Looks fast standing still. Nice example of one of the best years for Porsche. Like the man said, “no substitute for lots of power”.
Could it be a daily driver in the mountains of NC?
Sounds like the perfect environment for this car. It’s a lot of fun to drive in the twisties!
The only fault is a raspy exhaust. Would like to tone down.
It’s actually a sweet sound. The exhaust is mic’d in the video so you can hear it better.
I have always liked these cars but never pulled the trigger to get one because I know me and I would probably wind up with enough points on my license I would get it taken away. This car is5 hours away if I obey the speed limit… Only one way to find out how much time I can shave off.
Well documented and looks well looked after, especially with a decent IMS bearing installed. Someone will get a very good car.
New Buyer: Take it to a reputable shop and have it scoped for “Bore Score” (>200$). I had a ’03 996.2 C2 Bought for 17.5k$ in ’17, with 60k miles. Diagnosed with bore score in ’20 (before prices took off), it was fully disclosed and sold as a ticking time bomb for 8.5k$. Many 3.6L buyers worry about IMS, but BS is more prevalent!
We pulled the plugs out and checked the cylinder walls with a camera. Everything looked nice and smooth. From what I’ve read, this problem usually only affects cars that have been in extreme climates or that haven’t had regular oil changes. There’s even some who say it could be caused by a failing IMS bearing. It’s too bad you had a negative experience but, like failed IMS bearings, I’m sure it’s a rare occurrence. Companies like LN Engineering spend a lot of time and money scaring us all into spending but failure rates are actually low.
Sweet six music. A driver’s car.
993 series is the bargain of the 911 range.
The auction is ending in two hours and we are getting close to reserve! Please post any questions in the comments and I will try to get back to you before the end. Thanks for all the interest!
Note- this is not an exciting motor. It’s quite boring actually. Additionally, the body style is boring.
Go for a 997 or, if you can afford it, a 993.
Have you ever driven one? Most people form their opinions from things they read online. I’ve obviously driven this car and it’s a hoot!
