Is there a car more well-suited to modifications than the Ford Mustang? For over 60 years, hot rodders and racers have been making the Mustang their own, and with an aftermarket as robust as their powertrains, it’s fairly easy to make those customized Mustangs even faster. The “New Edge” Mustang of 1999 sharpened the rounded curves of its SN95 forebear and produced a car that stayed in step with the new millennium. My dad ordered a new Dark Satin Green ’99 GT when they were first introduced, and with its torquey V8 and tan leather interior, I felt like one of the coolest guys on the street. The owner of this 2000 GT has taken his car even further; with a turbocharged 4.6, a Saleen body kit, and other upgrades, this Mustang (located in Alabama) is offered for sale as a Barn Finds Auction.
According to the seller, the Mustang was built by a SEMA insider. For those who haven’t heard of it, SEMA is the “Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Organization,” which is known for their yearly show in Las Vegas. Every year, some of the country’s best car builders get together and present new builds to help sell products and, ostensibly, to show off their skills. This car has a turbocharger and an intercooler added to its single-overhead-cam 4.6-liter V8. Factory rated at 260 horsepower, the stock GT could run low 14s in the quarter mile, so a well-built turbocharged example with a five-speed is going to be fun. The seller has provided a photo of the receipts for all the work and the Dyno report. About $30,000 was spent on upgrades, which added up to 501 wheel horsepower!
Like my dad’s ’99, this GT has a leather interior with some upgrades in keeping with its increased-performance mission, including a tachometer with a shift light and A-pillar gauges to monitor fuel pressure, boost, and the engine’s air-fuel ratio (which is extremely important in a boosted engine – being too lean can, to say it mildly, ruin your day). I think the Mustang’s interior has aged better than almost any other interior from the ’90s and ’00s. The retro-themed cowled dashboard still somehow looks modern while also resembling a cross between an early Mustang and a C2 Corvette.
This Mustang is decked out in a Saleen body kit (those were always the best looking Mustangs, weren’t they?) with SSBC disc brakes and Bullitt/Torq-Thrust wheels with black centers. I can imagine that this Mustang sounds as good as it looks. The seller says it’s been sitting for a bit, but it runs and drives well, and he’s ready to let it go on Barn Finds, so enter a bid and try to take home a cool example of a New Edge pony.
