BF Exclusive: 1965 Pontiac GTO Project

1965 Pontiac GTO

From Mark A – I’m interested in selling my 1965 Pontiac GTO. I have too many projects right now, so it’s time to let it go. It’s not advertised anywhere else and will be exclusive through you. I purchased this car last year with the intent of fixing up. I was told it has a 1966 389 engine with 3 deuces and a 350 transmission. The original 2-speed transmission came with it too. It ran and drove then. This is a column shift car, but has the “rare” factory air conditioning. The PHS states it was originally equipped with a 389 four-barrel.

Side

The body was all original with original paint except the right front fender which the previous owner said was much better than the one that was on it. All the door panels are original and need replacing. No headliner. All the glass is original. We drove it around for awhile and then pulled the body off the frame and put it on a rotisserie. We then replaced the floorboards in the trunk and were putting the one piece floorboard in the body when… the owner of the rotisserie wanted it back (I will not make that mistake again). It comes with 3 bucket seats (2 passenger and 1 driver) the the back seat. It also has both bumpers. It has a clear title. I’m asking $12,000 but will consider realistic offers.

You can contact Mark via email here if you’re interested. Be sure to let him know that Barn Finds sent ya!

This would make for a nice project if my Mach1 wasn’t giving me fits that’s taking all my money to resolve. My first musclecar was a 65 GTO 389 / 4 Speed car, those 3 deuces make it more desirable to me.

$12,000 was the price of a nice running tri power back in 1979.

Talk about old I paid $825.00 for mine in perfect condition in 1971. It wasn’t a tri power but a 4 barrel 389 / 4 speed car.

In 1970 my best friend bought a 1966 GTO for $900 — a high price at the time. But what a car! It was unlike any GTO I’ve ever seen, it was loaded with every possible option, and the power train was tri-power, 4 speed, & [I believe] 433 posi rear. The only ’66 GTO I ever saw with that drive train, plus A/C, power windows, Tilt wood trim steering wheel, trunk release, AM/FM with reverb & power antenna, reclining passenger bucket seat w/headrest. Maroon with black interior and vinyl top, Rallye 1 wheels with the original red line tires. Had done only about 10,000 miles and was garaged all the time. As near a “mint condition” car as could be possible.

3 years later he was heading past the main Naval Hospital in Bethesda Md, very fast & very drunk, when he lost control of his goat. Rolled it a couple of times, barely missed a phone pole before coming to rest against a guardrail. Frame was warped so badly that only 3 wheels would touch ground at a time.

First to respond was the Naval Hospital Fire Dept, Second to respond was my friend’s father, a retired 2 star Admiral! Of course the Navy boys released my friend to his dad, before the local police could check him for DWI.

We ended up parting the car out, I had a 1967 GTO, & put a lot of the rare accessories onto my car.

Crawl into my bunk bed, think about my history home work, but read dad’s car magazine.
They compared a pontiac GTO and a Ferrari GTO.

The car is in Mt. pleasant Utah. We have pulled it back into the shop to start putting it back together. Now would be the time to buy it! Roached? I remember these cars being purchased when I was in high school for $600.00 and getting BEAT to death and junked out without a thought. It has been a real treat to find these treasures that are almost all there and not bent in half….and there are more treasures out there. Thanks Barn Finds for keeping the dream alive.
