BF Exclusive: 1973 Mercury Cougar Convertible #2

We just featured Ben’s white Cougar and here’s the second one. This Cougar has more miles, but it’s also cheaper. One more to go and it’s not a Mercury – do you know what it could be?

From Ben B – This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR7 convertible has a red body with a white interior and top (new when stored about 30 years ago).  I bought the car when it was about 7 years old. It has just under 158,000 miles and runs nice.

Upon bringing this car out of storage I did the following work; new battery installed, radiator, fuel pump, brake job, ignition, distributor, tires, headlights/switch, belts, voltage regulator, alternator, rebuilt carburetor, water pump, gas tank dropped and cleaned/gas sending unit and wipers. Runs and drives beautifully now.

It’s outfitted with a 351 Cleveland 2-barrel, automatic, power steering, power brakes, power windows, air conditioning (not working), console with clock, leather inserts in vinyl with Cougar heads embossed. The leather is in decent shape, as are the dash and glass. The sequential turn signals work.  The car needs paint and re-chroming though due to bay area sea air.

There were 3,185 XR7 convertibles produced in 1973 – last year produced! Old car price guide for 2/2016 values a condition #4 at $4,900.

This car is located in Vista, California and you can contact Ben via email here if you’re interested. If you have a collection cars like Ben’s that you like to sell, please consider selling them here!

This car isn’t far from me, less than an hours away, so I’ll try to take a look at it over the weekend. And I’ll post a notice for Ben on the Legendary Cougar Magazine (I bet you didn’t know there is a bi-monthly magazine dedicated to classic 1967-1973 Mercury Cougars) Facebook page to the Barn Finds page, rather than his eBay listing.

Nice plug Rich. There isn’t an eBay auction though, this is an exclusive. Thanks.

Sorry Jessie, just wanted to give it some love to our community. We have 2,000 friends and followers. I also put in a link for the white convertible as well. Let me know if you see some crossover!

Funny thing is the hardtop that graces the current issue of LCM was shot in Temecula, California, about 20 minutes north from Vista.

I’d still inspect the floor pans, cowl panel and trunk floor for rot.. Other than that, nice find.
