BF EXCLUSIVE: 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2

Those of you who are into racing most likely already know about the rare 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2. This example is located in Delaware, Ohio and it’s being listed as a Barn Finds Exclusive by Chris K. who is listing it for $12,000. Let’s check out this rare Aerocoupe.

“In motorsports, homologation is the approval process through which a vehicle, a race track, or a standardised part is required to go for certification to race in a given league or series”, according to Appendix J of the FIA International Sporting Code. Remember back when the cars in NASCAR looked like actual cars?

We have probably all seen more examples of Chevy’s Monte Carlo Aerocoupe than the Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 aerocoupe. The Pontiac seems like it’s much more elusive and/or exclusive. 1,225 Grand Prix 2+2s were made in 1986 and a scant 200 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupes were made that same year, but Chevy roared back with a production of 6,052 Monte Carlo Aerocoupes in 1987 which would be their last year. So yeah, if you can find a nice 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2, do not hesitate, jump on it!

Hey, speaking of jumping on it, did I mention that this one is for sale?! This is one nice car and I mean nice. Check out the photos at the bottom, this car looks like it’s in phenomenal condition. Chris says that this Grand Prix 2+2 “is 100% original with 47,586 miles on the clock. Original paint, interior, engine and driveline. Everything but the right turn signal indicator bulb works. Cold AC, working Cruse control. Has 4 very nice BF Goodrich tires with 90% tread.”

The super clean engine in this 2+2 is a 305 cubic-inch V8 with 165 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque and it’s backed up by GM’s 200-R4 4-speed overdrive automatic. This is one nice looking car and NADA is at $14,250 for a high retail value. This car may have investment potential, I can’t imagine that it will ever go down in value given its rarity.

Even with the smallish engine, that is one cool looking car!!!! Good luck with the sale!

Would this unique car be worth more, worth less or worth the same if a true muscle car drive train was transplanted in place of the anemic stock components?

Only engine mod I see is the too tall KnN air filter holding the lid up, sure all that fresh hot air made a difference, but the rest of the engine is completely hidden under all them hoses. Wow, that’s a lot of stuff!
Nicely kept car from the 80’s, won’t scare off any GN owners, but interesting none the less.

Friend of my uncle had a frame/alignment shop. He had one of these, could’ve bought it for $4500. Never cared for these, still don’t, turned it down at least half dozen times. Still would- weak power plant, so I’d swap it to an LSX. Drum brakes on back? Those gotta go. Suspension? Too soft, so that would need to be warmed over…
Thus, I’d ruin the value. But why buy something you don’t like so you ruin it’s “Collectibilty,” to make it enjoyable? I’d rather have a clone of a Daytona Charger than a real one, but that’s just me

An KILLER NICE 11K mile 1986 Grand Prix Aero Coupe sold at BJ at the Jan 2017 auction for only $11K. It was a very nice car that “I” thought was very well bought. Very much a Niche car as most folks think they are UGLY!

I have owned 5 of these cars over the years. Absolute GUTLESS wonders stock. A LS swap, good brakes and nice suspension update would INCREASE THE VALUE of NICE 1986 Grand Prix Aero Coupe as there are no real “Collector’s” for these cars therefore the modifications will add value.

The problem is that out of the 1200 produced there are very few NICE 1986 Grand Prix Aero Coupes out there. Most are trashed POS’s that have been through many owner’s.

The Pontiac Aero Coupes are cars that you buy the nicest one you can find, pay what your friends think is stupid money and happy that you are way ahead of the game by buying a NICE car. That purchase price will still be far less than the cost of building a turd!

Throw a LS engine, suspension, brakes and other G Body upgrades and you will have a nice driving, running, handling and stopping car that will put a smile on your face and set you apart from all the others at your local “Cars and Coffee”!

You meet the seller at their bank/financial institution, payoff the loan, get the title to the car and be on your way with your new to you car.

The VAST majority of ALL cars and trucks in the USA have LIEN on them so what’s the big deal????

The fact that this is a “Vintage” car has nothing to do with it.

Yes I think it’s “Just You”!

Curt. It is just you. A lien would not bother me, but the ugliness of the Aero Coupe design would eliminate me. The whole body is clunky looking and out of proportion–dang near as bad as the slant back Cutlass.

Title lien, buyer beware, how much is the payoff, what bank, and or financial pace,is holding the lien, and or title, was this stolen at one point, and or repoed,at one, point, or maybe some other financial crisis, of some sort, also are they hiding something, possibly wreaked at one point, maybe a rebuilt title.Remember rebuilt title hurts value 25-75 percent min.,Although probably rare ,but not Monte Carlo, and if you ask me this was car that killed Grand Prix, so do yourself a favor and, and buy a Monte Carlo, even if you have to make a clone of some sort. Put the 15-35k into the Monte Carlo clone, or possibly a true Monte Carlo Aero Coupe.

      I write:

Do you really believe all this crap you printed above just because the owner “Reports” in their ad that he/she has a lien on their car just like the VAST MAJORITY of all vehicle owners in the USA?

The reality is YOU “probably” have a lien on your own vehicle just like vast majority of all vehicle owner’s in the USA!

Does your above statement describe your own vehicle with a “Title Lien”?

What is this vague “vast majority” number you speak of, and where did you get it? 84.5% of /new/ cars /purchased/ last year was done through lease or loan financing.

But “barn finds” is not about new cars, nor cars recently purchased.

A lein against a >30 year old car does not represent conventional (ie, normal, routine) financing by any stretch of the imagination.

If the seller has a loan out against this car from which he can’t get out from underneath prior to selling: he’s paid too much, asking a buyer to pay too much, or both.

Are we looking at a car truly worth $14k here, or a car whose price has been determined by poor lending and personal finance decisions? In light of the spec sheet, I’m inclined to believe the latter.

Personally, never liked any of GM’s aerocoupes. Imo, just look ugly.

I remember these when they were new.The car got killer looks except for that aero design which is ugly on both the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo.I brought the mean edition of these G-bodies, the Buick Grand National.

Nothing wrong with the car a ZZ4 350 under the hood and some 3.73 gears out back wouldn’t fix.
