BF Exclusive: 1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

Update 12/9/2016 – Bob has just lowered his asking to $7,000!

From 12/9/2016 – A few weeks back, Jesse wrote up this sweet low mileage Caprice, you can read his post here. Sadly for the seller, they had several deadbeat bidders who flaked out on them. After seeing the response here on Barn Finds though, they’ve decided to list it with us as an exclusive! It’s a well optioned car, with leather, a V8 and just about every power option you could get in the late ’80s. With 49k miles on the clock, it’s in great shape and is ready for a new owner to enjoy it. Bob is asking $7,500, but is interested in hearing offers! The car is in Mahopac, New York, so if you would like to see it, have any questions or would like to make him an offer, click here to email him.

Jesse compared this Caprice to a Cadillac and I have to agree with him, you could easily mistake it for a Caddy, especially on the inside. The Brougham interior is just awesome! If you need to make a long journey, you can’t get much more comfortable than this. There is one tear in the driver’s seat, but the rest of the interior is in great shape.

I’m going to guess this car spent most of it’s life in the garage and was only taken out for Sunday drives and the occasional trip to the store. As Bob puts it, “this is one of those cars that always had two layers of floor-mats and it shows”.

I know it’s a bit of a “Grandma” car, but don’t let the interior deceive you, this car is packing a V8 with a respectable 250 pounds of torque! It only puts out 170 horsepower, but do you really need a ton of horsepower in a comfy cruiser like this? Don’t answer that question, I already know what most of you will say. But this was pretty impressive power for a big luxury car in the late ’80s. I guess you could always upgrade this 305, but if you as me it’s too original to mess with. The engine is said to run well, but the A/C does need some seals replaced to work. I’d want to get the it working right away to keep it cool for those long trips.

As was already stated, this Chevy isn’t perfect, it has a couple small flaws but looks to be a lovely car overall. I would want to find new trim for between the grille and headlight, which was damaged when the car was driven into the wall of the garage. Other than that, I would leave this Caprice as is and just drive it. I know the mileage is low, but what’s the point of owning a big luxury cruiser if you aren’t going to go cruise in it? I’d like to thank Bob for listing his car with us, so let’s see if we can find a good home for his Chevy!

The B-body cars were very solid, and comfortable….the Caprice, the LeSabre and the Delta 88 all had a good run during these years. The Chevy 305 fared much better than the Olds 307, with the 307’s needing a top end rebuild at around 50,000 miles. I liked the badging on these also as they didn’t use the bowtie emblems but used a classier crest. I wish the seller much luck. If i were the buyer, the only thing i would do is up the tire size..they were a little small from the factory. It improves an already great ride by leaps. These were my B’s and C’s……Great cars

SInce originality in terms of serial numbers means nothing to me, I’d be tempted to bolt in as much police package parts as I could, including the Lt1. I had a 87 undercover police package briefly and it was amazing. Great on the highway, handled very nicely.

Bad deal. Nice car BUT the description here on BF ignores important flaws/repairs needed that were disclosed in the ebay ad! The seller says “Needs Nothing” then describes costly bodywork and parts needed due to damage on hood/grill, front fender, rear quarter, both bumper fillers, windshield chips (which will flunk safety inspection in many States), leather seat-back hole, etc. That’s a heck of a lot of damage for a supposed “babied” 49K car. I’ve seen 200K mileage cars with less damage. The “Needs Nothing” statement of the seller is classic “Flipper Nonsense”. Shame. He/she should know better. We do. The car is worth about half or less of his price, particularly in this condition. That’s probably why ebay buyers ran away from this Seller’s offering. Better choices out there than buying from Flippers.

You make it sound like it’s a disaster. I just looked at the pictures from the original listing and I assume you did also, looks pretty good, doesn’t it? He says he’s asking $7500.00 but is interested in offers, this doesn’t sound like a rip-off to me. Atleast that’s how I see it.

Hey Joe, this is Bob the seller. You are being unbelievably overly critical and coming across as almost angry.

Yes, there are some minor damages/flaws on this 29 year old car While you are overstating them, you are aware of some of them because we always work hard to present our cars honestly and accurately through pictures and description on eBay.

We do not write the barnfinds ads and do not have the opportunity to put in the same information but rest assured that anybody that is interested in this car will get all the information and pictures they need to make an informed buying decision.

This is our first time doing a Barnfinds exclusive so we are learning how to best handle the inquiries from interested barnfinds subscribers. From now on, anybody who emails me asking for more information will be sent the original eBay ad with the full, honest, and accurate description of the car as well as the photos, including the ones showing the few minor flaws on the car.

The two deadbeat bidders never saw the car or even asked one question about it. The first never contacted us and the second gamed the auction to win it so that he could send us a low ball offer two days later thinking we’d be so desperate and frustrated and not want to list it again, that we’d take it. Of course we did not and instead turned to barnfinds for a better experience.

Glen, thank you for speaking up and not letting Joe take out his misplaced anger on my car.

Sadly this sounds like the typical Ebay bidder these days….I’ve had the same thing happen a few times…high bidder wins, shows up, low balls you hoping you are desperate, then walks if you don’t agree to his price. You have a very nice Caprice there and I hope it sold for what you wanted to get out of it.

I wonder if it looks like 149,000 miles in person and that’s the reason people are backing out.

      Thanks

Hi Gary, it’s in Mahopac, New York. I forgot to add that when I was writing up the ad. Sorry about that. As for the email link, you should be able to just click it. If not, let me know and I can get it to you.

Nice looking old cruiser. I’ve seen a whole slew of like these get butchered up with 5000 watts of stereo and giant ghetto wheels that look like they came from a stage coach on Gunsmoke. 😲😲😲

My Pops was a GM guy, and had several Caprice’s, and he would LOVE this one. I wish he were still with us so we could take a Sunday ride to take a look at it.
Thanks for sharing. Hope it goes to a good, loving home

As a mechanic in the 80’s all I can say is these were fantastic cars. This is the kind of car you could daily drive for two decades with minimal repairs required. My only gripe with them was the soft cam shafts they came with from the factory. It was an easy fix and the after market cams were much better. The damage Joe barked out about looks pretty minimal to me, if I were in a better position financially and if it were closer I would have considered it. Good luck to the seller.

I went to work for a sheriff’s Dep’t. in Wa. state and was assigned a worn out Dodge Diplomat patrol car that had serious alignment problems and topped out at about 86 mph. My next car was a new Caprice which seemed like heaven compared to the Dodge.

My dad bought a new ’79 Caprice Classic after nearly 20 years of Fords. After driving those late 70’s boats, it was a real pleasure to sit down in one of these- big car ride without the huge feeling. Power level of the 305 was just fine. When parking, it felt more like an intermediate size car. For years afterward, I noticed that these had a following- used car lots had signs saying “We buy Caprices”. This one looks great in the photos and is probably worth the effort to restore.

It’s a nice example of a Caprice for sure but 7000 is unlikely to happen.

I cut my teeth in police work driving an ’88 Caprice 9C1 police package. I I turned the air cleaner cover upside down to get that “whoop-whoop” when I floored it. I love “box” Chevy’s. Hint to all you potential buyers: Do NOT Armour-All the bench seat😬 (especially if you aren’t wearing the seatbelt)

Yes, nice photos and could be a nice car. But,the damage Bob described in the ebay ad (but not mentioned in the BF ad) will total more than $3500 in parts and body shop labor. I’m sure Bob knows this. The AC doesn’t work and is likely to be another expensive repair. If this car really has 49k miles (and not 89K or 110K or 149k miles as the odometer could have been replaced), it clearly was not cared for very well, at least exterior/interior and AC. Also clearly, except for detailing, doesn’t look like Bob hs put a dime into fixing the problems. The car is probably worth less than $3000 as is, and then someone will have to dump a ton of money and/or time into making it look like a “real”, well-preserved 49K car. Best of luck, Bob—but really–this is a dealer auction car that you picked up for hundreds not thousands. Full disclosure will set you free from the depths of Flipperdome. “We want you to do well but not that well”.

I personally bought the car from the son of the original owner. The car was always meticulously maintained and garage kept by the father. The son was very sentimental about the car and kept up the same level maintenance and care. He held onto it for a few years after his father passed away and did eventually title it in his own name so it is a one owner/one family car. The son only took it out of the garage for neighborhood drives, regular maintenance, almost yearly NY inspections, and the occasional local car show.

In the main picture section of the ebay auction you will see clear photos of the 3-page Carfax report. It shows no issues whatsoever including no accidents and NO odometer rollback. It shows a documented mileage history from 12/06/87 to 06/24/16 with that last report showing 49,042 miles. Most of the records are from NY Inspections where it always passed both safety and emission testing.

You could eat off the carpets, seats, vinyl top, engine, and undercarriage. This is a 49k original mile car. It has the original factory markings on the drive-shaft, orig cat in great shape, and the heat shields are still in place.

The son explained that his father often wore suspenders with a metal buckle in the back and that is likely why there is the one worn/ripped spot on the driver’s seat. The rest of the interior is beautiful.

The A/C system requires only a small fix, two small rubber ring seals replaced, the belt put back on, and a recharge.

The front and rear bumper fillers can be purchased on ebay for $100 all together

We are Finishline Auto of Westchester. We have been a state licensed, insured, and bonded dealer for the past 9 years. The pictures were taken in our showroom in Mahopac,NY where the car can be inspected in person. Please click on the original ebay auction and our seller profile to read our 100% positive feedback.

There was someplace about 10-15 years ago that was rebuilding these to as new condition. Wish I had bought one as I had worn out 3 previous ones, a 77,81 &84. They were good cars, I wish they were still building them today.
