Biff Approved: 1948 Ford Super Deluxe Convertible

48-ford-vert-3

Like the Ford that character Biff Tannen drove in the movie “Back To The Future”, this 1948 model is a great looking survivor that is ready to drive. Found in a barn, this ford needs some minor work, but is a great starting point for your next project. Bidding has reached $9,077 with the reserve unmet. Find it here on ebay out of Rogers, Arkansas.

Ready to hum along to your next destination, this Flathead V8 is in good health and has received extensive maintenance to insure safe operation. The engine and bay look acceptable, and the newly run wiring harness is laid out nicely, with a clean and detail oriented appearance. Apparently being a 1949 flathead engine, with a 1939 floor mounted manual transmission, it would appear that this Ford spent some time sitting before receiving a slightly newer heart transplant.

With the top down it is easy to see how nice this Ford really is. The interior looks very nice with seat covers, and that beautiful dash. That dash is a work of art and is showcased every time this Ford is driven with its top down. The door paneling looks nice, and the only thing that stands out is the rear seat that would be great recovered as well. Dropping the top on this Ford is no problem, but the power mechanism is out of commission at this point. Also there is no convertible top to speak of, so for now this is a fair weather Ford.

Taking a further look at the exterior reveals a very nice paint finish that appears to be original. The paint has become thin over time, but still bares good coverage. The passenger fender and hood show some of the thinning paint, but the appearance of this Ford is breath taking. There is something to appreciate about a car aging gracefully, showing little signs to its true age. There is no apparent rust on the exterior of this ford, and rust in general seems limited to only the trunk area. There is some minor rot in the trunk space, but the seller is providing new panels to fix this issue. All of the body trim is present and is in nice shape. The bumpers looks very nice, though it appears the platting is starting to chip and peel. It would  appear there are a few minor dents in the grill slats, but overall this is a great condition Ford needing very little.

Although not perfect, this classic convertible is a great starting point, and is in nice enough condition to be maintained as is. Making for a great driver, you could always be Biff for Halloween, though we wouldn’t opt to have a car load of manure.  Would this 48 Ford take you “Back To The Future”?

Nice shot with the manure LOL!

    Also recall that the Greased Lightning was a ’48 Ford – wasn’t Biff’s car a ’46?

    Great cars!

Most of the time, but occasionally its parking lights move! Doc calls it a ’46, though, so I’ll take that as the writers’ intent.

Speaking of Doc’s observation of “He’s in a ’46 Ford, we’re in a Delorean, he’d rip through us like we were tin foil!” Has IIHS done that particular match-up yet?

That’s about as close to the Biff car as you’re going to get. Although Biff drove a ’46 there wasn’t a lot of difference between the two. I’d take either one, sans manure that is. Got enough of that in my days on the farm….

Sweet ride. I wish I had some money. Unfortunately, this car wouldn’t take me “Back to the Future”. Probably take me “Back to Divorce Court”.
The red rims really add some pop to this classic. Scratching my head why they didn’t go ahead and redo the back seat.

Didn’t Phil Silvers drive a version of this in yellow in the movie “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”? Mike Mazurki’s kid led him to the river and a failed crossing. Funny scene but sad for the car.

Very nice car, depending on the reserve? A super one of these 42 to 48 Ford convertible’s restored or modified can be an easy 50K. If bought under 20K, you might break even.

Redo both seats so they match, replace the top and get the power mechanism going, and you’re back to the past, and having fun! I wish I could buy this thing. Sort of. A great time for the right person who’s into cars, not investments, and can just enjoy it whether it pays for itself or not.

AFAIRC, Biff’s Ford wasn’t a originally a convertible, it had it roof chopped off for the movie.
