Big Block 4-Speed: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS began life North of the U.S. border, as the body number plate lists the final assembly plant as OS, indicating an Oshawa, Ontario Canada-built vehicle.  Although the car still needs a lot of work to be completed on the inside and outside, most of the mechanical restoration has already been done, so if you’re more of a body man and love Chevelles this may be a good car for you.  Located in East Greenbush, New York, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS can be found here on eBay with a Buy It Now price tag of $21,500.  Barn Finds thanks Larry D for yet another great tip on this one.

The beauty of this Chevelle SS, so far, is what you can’t immediately see from the outside.  Although not original, pop the hood and you’ll find a period-correct December 1970 CTX coded engine, which has been totally rebuilt with the proper date coded and letter coded parts including 290 heads.  Upon completion, the engine was fired up and ran for 45 minutes to break it in, and the seller says it runs great.  Also installed is a January 1970 M21 Muncie 4-Speed manual transmission.  The 3.31 positraction 12 bolt rear-end is original and has also been rebuilt, and to top everything off the frame has been completely powder coated.

Outside and inside aren’t quite as beautiful as under the hood, but thankfully the body is mostly complete although it needs quite a bit of work.  The front fenders and rear quarter panels are showing rust, as is the trunk floor, which the seller says could be patched.  The car has already had the front floors patched and the back floors are said to be solid.  The original paint color was Fathom Blue, which can be verified by the 28 on the second line of the body plate, although inside the door jamb shows red so it has probably been quite some time since the car has worn its original color.  Inside, just about everything needs attention, but it’s nice to see that there are plenty of new exhaust parts in there waiting for the new owner!  The good news is that interior and exterior parts are readily available, and although it may not be exactly easy it shouldn’t take an overwhelming amount of work to make this Chevy into a nice driver-quality muscle car.

While this Chevelle does still need plenty of work, it definitely has a lot of good things going for it and shows potential to be a really nice ride once the body and interior work are done.  It also comes with a clean title and receipts for the work that has already been done, which is always a plus.  There’s even an option to make an offer, so if you catch the seller on a good day the car could possibly be bought for less than the asking price.  What are your thoughts on this Canadian-born 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS?  Could you see yourself taking this on as a project, and if so what do you think is a reasonable price to pay for what you are getting here?

Actually, it didn’t have to be built in Canada, just originally exported to Canada. GM of Canada kept the records, unlike GM’s US divisions.

You would think a seller could at least take all the crap off the front seat and take a decent photo.

So if this is a factory 4 speed car why does it look like it has the single wide brake peddle with the disk brake emblem and not 2 smaller peddles? Not to mention what also looks like a hack job on the transmission tunnel for the shifter.
