Big-Block Project: 1967 Mustang GTA 390 S-Code

Ford’s Mustang lineup was already a hit by 1967, but the GTA package gave buyers something a little extra. What you’re looking at here is a 1967 Mustang GTA 390 S-code project, a rare big-block car that still carries its original engine and drivetrain. The seller has listed it here on Craigslist with an asking price of $15,000 or best offer in addition to considering some trades. The car is located in St. Louis, MO, and listed here on craigslist. Thanks for the tip Barney!

This GTA left the factory finished in red with a black interior, paired with power steering and power brakes. According to the seller, the original 390 big-block is disassembled and ready for a rebuild, with both cylinder heads already done. The block remains standard bore and stock, offering a solid foundation for restoration. The transmission is still in place, as is the factory 9-inch rear end, another plus for originality. A Marti Report is included to document the car’s build, and the seller confirms it comes with a clean title.

Photos show the car as a true project, but importantly, much of the necessary sheet metal has already been sourced. New quarters, floors, and other panels are part of the deal, along with most of the small parts needed to put the Mustang back together. That’s a significant value since hunting down correct parts can be one of the toughest aspects of tackling a project like this.

The GTA badge was reserved for automatic-equipped GT cars, and pairing it with the 390-cubic-inch S-code engine made for a serious street machine. In period, this car would have been a cut above the average Mustang, combining big-block power with GT-level trim and features. Today, genuine GTA 390 cars remain desirable among collectors, especially when they retain their original drivetrain.

As it sits, this project will need a full restoration, but with its Marti Report documentation, factory driveline, and included sheet metal, it offers a rare chance to bring a genuine S-code Mustang GTA back to life. Once completed, it would be a standout at shows and a thrilling reminder of the muscle car wars of the late 1960s.

Would you take on this big-block Mustang project, or hold out for one already restored?

Not sure if this is the same one, but I recall seeing a ’67 GTA S code coupe sell in North Central Kansas about 2 years ago.
7500 was a better price then.

So $15k sounds like a lot but in reality this is where we are at in the car market. Hagerty puts a fair one in at $27k and this one has most all the parts and then some. I’ve put together worse but it would definitely be a “project” and I’ve loved the ‘67’s

At 15K, I wouldn’t consider this one even if it was a fastback!

Looks like the crack epidemic of the 80’s returned once again at $15k for a rolling rust tray. Dont dare sandblast this or you’ll only have the emblems & gas cap left.
