Big Blue Box: 1957 Chevrolet Step Van

This 2 door 1957 Chevy doesn’t have the appeal of a hardtop, but it does have a 283 V8 and a 4 speed. These aren’t the coolest looking vans, but they definitely  look vintage. It’s a one ton This one is listed on eBay in Huntington Beach, California with a BIN of $6,800. It was used for 20 years on an airport, then stored for 30, leaving only 10 years unaccounted for. It runs and drives. The Chevy badge and grill are missing but replacements are likely available.

It has a lovely beach view, not included, unless you plan on moving in. The tri 5 speedometer adds a nice touch of nostalgia.

While not quite enough room for dancing, the floors do appear to be in nice shape. They’ll be a good start for about any use.

What do you think someone will be willing to pay for this old van? These step vans have gotten popular and there have been some interesting custom examples appear lately like this one. It looks like it should have duallys on the rear. There are suspension and brake kits available for about $800. Uses for this step van are limited but perhaps it will live on as a cool vending truck of some sort, Tacos or dog grooming or something. It’s hard to imagine driving this very far even with suspension improvements.

This would be a great base for a period correct camper conversion. And don’t worry about driving this thing. Slow down. I’ve watched a generation already work themselves to death, retire with little to nothing only to become incapable of enjoying the little stuff. There’s probably a state park near you calling your name.

This would be great for hauling your parts to swapmeets.

It’s not a DIVCO but it’s still pretty cool. Would make a nice tailgating vehicle.

The rear wheel wells are “Pre-tubbed”! Looks like there is plenty of room in there for huge meats, or dual wheels, if desired. A bit funny in appearance, as it seems that a more spacious body was dropped onto a fairly narrow chassis and running gear. Is that body aluminum, or steel?
The seller seems to have omitted right side and rear photos. One with the rear doors open would be helpful for potential buyers, plus inside the roof, and a couple of underside shots as well. No mention of cracks in the glass, but I can’t see any.
This does look like fun, and I hope it finds a great home. Maybe some nomad’s dream abode?

Well, first off… it’s really a 4 door but, I get where you were going with that. LOL
Anyway, this truck looks to be in very good condition to be a 60 year old work truck. I agree it also looks like you could add a tandem axle in the rear without modifying the body if your uses would need that. Sadly, I have no place to keep it or any real use for it but, I hope someone does.

Does anyone else think the gearshift looks like it was cut from a gunstock?
